According to Box Office Vietnam data, the film "Searching for Ambergris" officially reached 200 billion VND in revenue on December 13th, marking a memorable milestone for Vietnamese cinema in 2025.
With this achievement, the film is now firmly in the top 3 highest-grossing films at the box office, ranking only behind two international blockbusters, "Zootopia 2" and "King of Kings," demonstrating the enduring appeal of a domestic project amidst fierce competition.
Specifically, on December 13th, director Duong Minh Chien's debut film sold approximately 9,000 tickets across 749 screenings, grossing nearly 762 million VND. The previous weekend alone, "Searching for Long Dien Huong" brought in an additional 6.7 billion VND, with 87,528 tickets sold across 2,409 screenings. These figures demonstrate that the film not only created a positive initial impact but also maintained consistent performance throughout its weeks of release.
Compared to other Vietnamese films released at the same time, "Searching for Long Dien Huong" is considered a rare box office phenomenon. While many other films such as "The Haunted Inn," "Marrying My Father," and "The Agarwood Inn" suffered from low ticket sales, or even faced the risk of early exits and heavy losses, Duong Minh Chien's film consistently held the top spot in box office revenue for many days, becoming the preferred choice for audiences.
Film expert Nguyen Phong Viet believes that "Searching for Long Dien Huong" has the potential to reach 220 billion VND if it continues to maintain its current pace of screenings and positive word-of-mouth. According to him, this is a rare film this year that has received high praise from both critics and the general audience, a key factor in ensuring its long-term success in theaters.
With its current success, "Searching for the Dragon's Breath" has secured a place in the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2025. It ranks behind blockbusters like "Red Rain" (714 billion VND), "The Four Venomous Men" (332 billion VND), "Battle in the Air" (252 billion VND), "Detective Kien: The Headless Case" (249 billion VND), "Ancestral House" (242 billion VND), "Flip Face 8: The Embrace of the Sun" (232 billion VND), and "Billion-Dollar Kiss" (212 billion VND), while surpassing "Underground Tunnel: The Sun in the Darkness" (172 billion VND) and "Abandoning My Mother" (171 billion VND).
Released on November 14th, "Searching for Ambergris" features a strong cast including Quang Tuan, Ma Ran Do, Doan Quoc Dam, Nguyen Thao, and Hoang Toc Dai. The film revolves around the journey to find a block of ambergris, a sacred and precious artifact of a coastal village, which was stolen by Tuan (Ma Ran Do) due to his deep debt. Following this incident, Tam (Quang Tuan) and Hoang (Hoang Toc Dai) decide to go to Ho Chi Minh City to find Tuan, and discover that he has been lured into a life of debauchery and is involved with a criminal gang.
From its release, the film was hailed as a breath of fresh air at the Vietnamese box office, amidst a growing audience saturation with familiar horror or family drama genres. Despite its somewhat predictable plot, "Searching for the Dragon's Breath" captivated viewers with its seamless blend of humor and action. The fight and chase scenes were meticulously choreographed, with expert camera work, and were considered outstanding compared to the average Vietnamese film; some even argued that it was one of the best domestic films ever released in theaters in terms of action sequences.
