The Seodaemun Police Station (Seoul) executed a search warrant at singer Psy 's management office and vehicle as part of an investigation into possible violations of the Medical Services Act.
This move marks a significant step in verifying allegations that the singer received psychotropic sleeping pills over a long period without directly seeking medical attention.
According to information from the investigating agency, during the search, police seized Psy's mobile phone for forensic analysis. This is considered important evidence to determine whether the singer's consultations and prescriptions complied with regulations on telemedicine. In addition, police also seized some related documents at his management office and are reviewing them to decide when to summon Psy for questioning.
The focus of the case lies in the suspicion that Psy received prescriptions for psychotropic sleeping pills from a university hospital in Seoul continuously from 2022 until recently without undergoing a direct examination. Under South Korean law, remote prescriptions are legal in some cases, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the conditions for doing so remain strictly controlled. If a patient does not meet the eligibility criteria or the doctor does not follow the correct procedures, it may be considered a violation of the law.
The suspicions became more serious when the investigation revealed that Psy's manager was the one who went to the hospital to pick up the medication on several occasions, instead of the singer himself. This action potentially violates regulations regarding medical prescriptions and medication dispensing, as the law requires the person receiving the prescription to pick up the medication themselves or follow a legally authorized procedure.
In response to media inquiries, the hospital involved declined to comment, stating that it could not offer any opinion while the investigation was ongoing. The doctor who treated Psy, named in the investigation file, reportedly denied all allegations of wrongdoing. According to initial reports, the doctor asserted that the remote consultation with Psy was conducted in accordance with regulations and did not exceed the scope permitted by law.
Psy's management company also issued an official response through KBS. They acknowledged that the singer had been using telemedicine since the COVID-19 pandemic and continued to do so due to his busy work schedule. A company representative stated that there was an "oversight" in the medication process, particularly in having his manager pick up the medication on his behalf. However, they affirmed that Psy did not use anyone else's identity, did not misuse medication, and did not use medication for purposes outside of the prescribed range. The company emphasized that all medication use was based on the doctor's instructions.
Meanwhile, police said the investigation will continue to expand in the coming days to verify whether any violations of the law occurred, including receiving medication improperly, prescribing incorrect medications, or using invalid telemedicine methods. Authorities are also examining the responsibility of both the hospital and the individuals involved.
