From a makeup artist, expensive model for advertising shows, Phuc found it difficult to accept being paralyzed after only a few weeks of illness. He called it a "nightmare". "Phuc is afraid of death, afraid of becoming a burden to his mother, afraid of not being able to recover before his father dies," he said.
Was "humiliated" by Nam Trung
Dam Quang Phuc was born in 1987 in Ho Chi Minh City. He is a makeup artist, a freelance model, and also has a talent for crafts.
5 years ago, this guy tried with " Vietnam's Next Top Model 2013" and Nam Trung was one of the judges of the show.
In the behavior part, in front of a large number of candidates, the press, the judge Nam Trung asked: "Doing make-up is so humiliating, why should I become a model?". The question was commented on as heavy, "insulting" other people of Nam Trung, causing public opinion immediately after that, there was a wave.
As for Dam Quang Phuc, on his personal page, he shared: "Naturally obsessed with the saying: it's so embarrassing to do make-up, why should I be a model?" Then the guy also announced: "Everyone, Phuc has already exited VNTM 2013. Everyone, please stop congratulating Phuc, sorry to disappoint you."
When public opinion was noisy with the incident, Nam Trung chose to refuse to answer the media. The judge said that he did not care about this contestant's statements and continued to guide the contestants at the photography round.
5 years later, Dam Quang Phuc returned to " The Face Vietnam 2018" and once again faced Nam Trung in the role of Host. The guy and the male judge solved the old problems, coach Thanh Hang made a very concise and charismatic reconciliation of a top supermodel: "Forgiving others is also forgiving yourself. ".
Having a strange disease, afraid of not recovering in time to mourn his father
A year ago, Quang Phuc noticed headaches causing him discomfort and insomnia. But at that time, he just treated them as flu, so he didn't visit the doctor. By the time he found out, the disease was already severe.
The doctor said that Phuc suffered from progressive multifocal brain, directly affecting the motor nervous system. That's why three months ago, he often fell off the car, missed steps, was difficult to hold and collapsed while attending the event, causing his friends to jump up and take him to the hospital.
Phuc's week in the hospital, according to him, is a scary time. He gradually weakened due to the development of brain disease, and again contracted pneumonia.
There are two healthy people in the family, Aunt Dung and her mother, who have to share to take care of Phuc and his father, who is suffering from terminal cancer. At that time, he often lay alone with tears in his eyes and wondered what was happening to him.
After a week, Phuc was able to go home. It is not because of his illness that he has recovered, but his family asks him to return home to rest, because the journey ahead is still long. In the room, Phuc cried again and despaired.
He tried to use the phone, using the voice input function to text his friend: "The doctor said Phuc will lose consciousness. Before losing consciousness, Phuc wants to tell Tien that...".
The calm messages, clearly sharing about the serious health condition, Phuc had to use all his efforts to send before he could not.
One day, Phuc suddenly called his close friend Thanh, sobbed, said: "Suddenly I don't remember where I met you."
At that time, Phuc clearly felt panic and fear when he knew that his memory was declining. And according to the doctor, it is a warning sign that the disease is getting worse.
Phuc lay on the bed, right arm and leg motionless. All of his activities are supported by his mother and sister-in-law. Many times, when he saw his mother running up and down many times, he was too tired, he tried to use a cane to go to the toilet and then fell on the floor and lay there until morning.
"Trying to get up but couldn't, the arm was numbed by the whole body, feeling helpless," he said.
All day in the four walls, Phuc seemed to be under house arrest. He wakes up with a pill and goes to bed with one, plus a few sedatives.
The doctor assigned Phuc to take antibiotics to control the inflammation, in addition to sleep a lot, keep a happy spirit. But he had trouble sleeping, every night he only slept 4-5 hours despite taking medicine, and when he woke up, he was in a lethargic state, lack of alertness.
Seeing that I am no longer myself, Phuc loves his body and loves his mother. Phuc saw that his mother was suffering so much that at the age of 69, he was still full of worries, so he often said: "I am a burden for you".
As for Phuc's mother, she suppressed suffering and expressed optimism so that her children could have the motivation to fight. She said that moving the stairs up and down makes her legs stronger and taking care of her children is a happiness, so she wants to take care of them for the rest of her life.
Every day, Phuc and his mother had a few happy conversations when she came up to feed him breakfast, lunch and dinner. But as soon as his mother left, the door closed, he continued to be immersed in negative thoughts.
He looked sadly at the itchy spots on his body, or the weak arm that couldn't hold a glass of water. At that time, saying a sentence, with Phuc, was also difficult. He seemed to have no hope for recovery.
"I was sad and then my mother was sadder. I think crying won't change anything, so I have to work hard for her," he said.
That was the first time Phuc freed himself from the thought of "no hope". He encouraged himself after a few moments of depression: "I'll get over it! It'll be fine".
Mrs. Hanh, mother of model Dam Quang Phuc, couldn't help but be surprised by her son's change. She was both happy and worried when she saw her son diligently learning to walk, one day he was too exhausted, sweat soaked his pillow.
She knows that her son is working hard and eager to get treatment to recover quickly, because he doesn't want her to suffer. But she advised me not to hurry. "It's good to make a little progress every day," she said.
Every day at 8am is when Phuc's walker assistant arrives, also the time he looks forward to the most, because he feels "I'm walking towards victory". In the first week, Phuc asked to practice for 7 days, but after feeling that it was not good, Ms. Hanh proposed to reduce it to 2-3 sessions.
When Phuc practiced, his brain had to work hard, which caused a feeling of fatigue, even a distorted mouth. Every step he took was hard, painful and then his whole body was so restless and uncomfortable that he scratched his head and scratched his ears.
Initially, Phuc practiced on a four-legged walker with wheels. He then switched to a cane and now even holds it up to show that he walked on his own without assistance.
All these positive changes took place in just one month, from the time that Phuc called: choosing effort instead of blaming fate.
In the past few months, Dam Quang Phuc's treatment and living expenses have been expensive, making him ponder when thinking about the future when he can't work to help his mother.
Listening to the advice of close friends, don't think too far, Phuc has more motivation and now vomits not wishing for much, just hoping to be able to go downstairs to visit his father and grandmother.
"I'm 'running a race' with my father. My father's prognosis is only six months. I have to get well again," said Dam Quang Phuc.
