Piggybacking Him That Ran Over The Queen of Tears Became Korean Drama of the Year

Piggyback Anh Ma Run has been a hot topic on all social media platforms in many Asian countries, including Vietnam. Therefore, the drama has surpassed many blockbusters to become the Korean drama of 2024.

Time magazine recently published an article titled "How Lovely Runner Became Korean Drama of the Year." In this article, Time heaped praise on tvN's new drama and explained how it became more than a series of other television productions.

"Although only half of 2024 has passed, other dramas will need to work hard to dethrone Lovely Runner from the title of Best Korean Drama," the newspaper commented.

The article states that Piggyback Him outperforms the films Queen of Tears, Spooky World, She Goes and Marries My Husband when there is a combination of nostalgia, romance, murder subplot and painful emotions of having to go back in time over and over again.

Speaking about the film, the newspaper praised: "Instead of prioritizing causality, the film emphasizes emotional stories, unfolding a love that transcends fate, completing the story through 3 times through the time of the characters."

Time magazine also praised the happy ending for heroine Sol not only from her relationship with Ryu Sun Jae but also from the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a film director. This is consistent with the "tradition" of Korean romantic dramas of prioritizing the perspective of women.

In addition to the above advantages, Time pointed out the unfortunate limitation of the film is that it shows the awkwardness of portraying the heroine's disability as an obstacle that needs to be overcome or cured in order to reach a happy ending. While the first episode, it did a good job of not portraying Im Sol's disability as a tragedy but only as an aspect of her personality. However, later when the character embarks on a trip back in time, this positive perspective is reduced.

Carry Him That Runs tells the story of Im Sol (played by Kim Hye Yoon), a fangirl devastated by the death of idol Ryu Seon Jae (played by Byeon Woo Seok) who gave her the will to live. She travels back to 2008 to save her idol.

Newsis said that after the Reply craze of 1997 (2012), dramas that followed the idol fan motif of the 1990s mostly received only average responses. However, for "Piggybacking That Run," screenwriter Lee Si Eun used a fresh way of telling it.

According to Good Data, the drama topped the drama charts for 3 consecutive weeks this past May. Lead actors Byeon Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon also ranked 1st and 2nd respectively in the rankings for actor of the month. In addition, the drama also secured the top position in terms of viewership among men and women between the ages of 20 and 49 on all channels for 8 consecutive weeks.

The film "Piggyback" was adapted by Lee Si Eun from the web novel of the same name, directed by Yoon Jong Ho, broadcast on tvN (South Korea). The series ran for 16 episodes, ending its final episode on May 28. The drama spawned countless "Seon-chinjas" (diehard fans of Piggyback).

After the final episode, viewers had to continue to praise the script so perfectly, so brilliantly far ahead of the original work of Piggyback.
