A 37-year-old Vietnamese female guest posed for photos of yoga movements outside Gyeongbokgung Palace during a trip to South Korea from October 29 to November 4. In one movement, the female tourist leaned her foot against the outer wall of the palace.
The female guest said that filming videos and taking photos did not violate the regulations and when posing for yoga, many tourists passed by to applaud and cheer, asking for a group photo. The incident is controversial in Vietnam and also in Korea.
Prior to this incident, Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University shared on his personal page: "Gyeongbokgung Palace is a national heritage that represents Korean culture and history. You are free to practice yoga in any country or region, but practicing yoga in one place is the national cultural heritage of a country, which is clearly wrong." He added: "The officials of the Gyeongbokgung Palace will definitely have to prevent things like this from happening in the future."
"You can freely practice yoga in any country but relying directly on the national heritage wall is wrong," he said, adding that the authorities need to prevent similar actions from happening again.
Kim Yong-gap, an official of the Korean Heritage Administration, said there were no specific rules on dress outside the Gyeongbokgun Palace. However, if any foreigner damages South Korea's heritage, he or she will be fined, even deported.
Meanwhile, Go In-hye, a reporter for MK News, said that the lack of clarity in the dress code makes some tourists dress inappropriately when visiting palaces in South Korea. Countries such as Thailand and Cambodia strictly regulate and control the costumes of visitors, ensuring the sanctity of the relic.
In the comment section of MBC News' newsletter, the Korean online community also does not support the behavior of Vietnamese tourists. A user named Twok said that this action would cause the female tourist great trouble if she was in the country and called for the expulsion of the female tourist.
"Not breaking the law doesn't mean you're behaving morally," said a user named Nkm1.
On the morning of November 6, MBC's news also reported on this incident. Not only MBC, Korean newspapers such as Nate, Chosun, The Joong Ang... also simultaneously reported on this incident. Even those images are at the top of searches on social media.
I thought that the incident had calmed down after the main character spoke up, but I didn't expect those images to appear on Korean television and newspapers. And then these images continue to cause a lot of controversy on social media.
- "On Korean TV, I don't know how this sister is feeling, right?".
- "I love yoga, but looking at people who practice bluffing like this, I feel so embarrassed."
- "I don't mind, but the whole country is afraid to replace me."
- "I thought it was good, where it is necessary to be dignified and polite, it is displayed to perform actions like this".
- "I don't know what to do this, it's really embarrassing."
Gyeongbokgung is the most famous and largest palace in Korea, built in 1395 north of Seoul, attracting international visitors to Korea.
This is not the first time guests have performed yoga in tourist attractions and controversial public places. Three months ago, a group of women also recorded a video of practicing yoga in the middle of the road in Thai Binh. On October 24, another group of guests performed yoga on the top of Fansipan and a cloud hunting spot in Da Lat, which also caused controversy in the online community.
Hoai Tam, a guide in Ho Chi Minh City specializing in Korean tours, said that guests often like to check in all kinds of designs at famous tourist attractions. However, it is necessary to carefully study the regulations in each place to avoid trouble. In addition, religious relics and works in Asian countries are sacred places that need to be respected. After being condemned, the Vietnamese female tourist said that she had "learned from her experience" and would not take similar photos in sacred places.
