Not a prophet, but this girl seemed to predict Hoa Than's fate, saving him from a humiliating end. In the end, she received a reward of a part of the famous rich minister's fortune.
During more than twenty years of officialdom, Ho Than relied on Qianlong's favor to accumulate a huge fortune, becoming a famous corrupt official in history. After Qianlong passed away, Jiaqing, who had just succeeded to the throne, removed Ho Than from office and investigated him, confiscated his assets, and sentenced him to death.
According to the records in "Qing History Draft", Jiaqing originally did not like He Shen, but his status as an emperor was only nominal, and all power was in the hands of the retired emperor Qianlong, so he had to endure. Sohu believes that this history book also records a strange story related to He Shen. That is, a beauty predicted his fate.
The beauty loved by Emperor Qianlong and Emperor Jiaqing
Initially, Jiaqing intended to execute Heshen by slow slicing, but thanks to the request of this beauty, Heshen was granted three feet of white silk, preserving his body intact, and his family was not implicated. It was none other than Princess Gulun Hexiao, Heshen's daughter-in-law and also the princess that Qianlong loved the most.
Although she was only the daughter of a concubine, she was still given the title of Princess Gu Lun, a title reserved only for the daughter of the Empress. Princess Hexiao's older brother, Prince Jia Shen Yong Yan (later Emperor Jiaqing), was also recorded as being quite fond of his younger sister.
Regarding Qianlong's love for Hexiao, history books recorded: "Qianlong had a hot temper. If the eunuchs and maids made the slightest mistake, they were beaten with whips, some were punished with more than a hundred lashes. No matter how angry they were, when they saw the princess, their anger immediately disappeared."
Later, Princess Gulun Hexiao's mother beat a palace maid to death, angering Qianlong and causing her to be demoted from a noble concubine to a concubine. However, not wanting to see her daughter in pain, Qianlong restored her to her status as a noble concubine not long after. This was very rare in Qing history.
When Princess Gulun Hexiao was ten years old, Qianlong even said many times: "If you were a boy, I would definitely make you the crown prince." Every time Hexiao left the palace, she was allowed to ride in a golden palanquin, a treatment that other princesses did not receive.
Princess Gu Lun He Xiao was famous for her intelligence and sharpness. So how did the story of the princess predicting the fate of He Shen take place? In the 54th year of Qianlong, He Xiao, then 15 years old, was married to Feng Shen En De, the only son of He Shen.
On the day the princess got married, Qianlong prepared a dowry of millions of taels of silver, ten times more than that of an ordinary princess. Furthermore, any high-ranking official, no matter how high their position, had to hold jewels and stand in front of the princess's flower palanquin to pay their respects, even the high-ranking official A Gui was no exception.
Hoa Hieu's prediction of the end of Hoa Than
Princess Co Luan Hoa Hieu was very smart. She discovered that her father-in-law was embezzling money. She told her husband Phong Than An Duc: "Your father is extremely favored by the emperor, but he does not know how to repay him. He only knows how to take advantage of him. I am worried about him. I am afraid that he will lose his life in the future. I will also be implicated by him."
A few years later, Jiaqing indeed took action against Heshen, and the princess's prediction came true. He Xiao immediately begged his brother to spare Heshen's life, keeping his body intact, and at the same time preserving the lives of Fengshen Ende and the other members of the Heshen family.
After being convicted, Ho Than was sentenced to death by mutilation, but Gia Khanh later allowed Ho Than to die at home to save face. Ho Than's huge fortune, accumulated during a lifetime of corruption as an official, was confiscated. Gia Khanh Emperor even granted Ho Hieu a portion of the confiscated property. Through this, it can be seen that Gia Khanh Emperor also favored Princess Co Lun Ho Hieu.
During the reign of Emperor Daoguang, this princess continued to be taken care of by her nephew. In the third year of Daoguang, in the ninth month, Hexiao fell ill and passed away at the age of 49. Emperor Daoguang was extremely saddened and personally went to pay respects to his aunt's grave. This was definitely a special treatment.
Looking back at the life of Princess Gu Lun He Xiao, through three emperors, Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang, even when He Shen was destroyed, she was still favored as before. This was truly an amazing feat.
One of the longest living princesses
Not only was Gu Lun Hexiao the most favored princess, but she was also one of the longest-lived princesses since the Qing Dynasty entered the Central Plains. To explain this, scientists say that the lives of the princesses were very different in the two periods before and after the Qing Dynasty took control of the Central Plains.
Before that, the daughters of kings had a healthy, carefree life like nomads on the steppe. Many were good at horseback riding and archery. If not, they were free to fly and move around in the vastness of the world instead of being confined in their boudoirs. Therefore, they grew up healthy and strong, and with good material conditions, they could live quite a long time.
But when the Qing emperors and their families lived in the Forbidden City in Beijing, the harem system was complete, and the princesses were bound by palace rules. Although they lived in luxury, they were constrained, overly pampered, isolated from nature and the outside world, and extremely sedentary, making it difficult to stay healthy.
Not to mention their mothers, concubines and even the queen, also had to endure the same "sunburn" situation, always living in fear, having to be careful every minute and every hour to protect themselves, so many children were weak from the time they were fetuses, and after birth had very low resistance to disease.
As for the princesses who made it through their immature stage to adulthood, why didn’t many live long? Experts say that although their material life lacked nothing, and could be said to be extremely luxurious, the Qing princesses did not get whatever they wanted but had to live according to the rules and obligations set for them.
What they feared most was being sent to distant lands like Mongolia, but that was the fate of many of them, due to the Qing Dynasty's policy of intermarriage between Mongols to maintain border stability. Huang Taiji married 10 of his 14 daughters to Mongols; Kangxi also married most of his daughters to princes of this country.
Being brought back by their husbands for political purposes, and living in a faraway land, out of sight of their father, they were very comfortable with the situation where even though they were the main wives, their status was not as good as that of the concubines. Not to mention the difference in climate, lifestyle, loneliness due to the absence of relatives and the feeling of being outsiders, their physical and mental health both declined, and their lifespans were difficult to prolong.
The Chinese emperor and his sad 'love stories' mark history Khánh Huyền1 year agoIn China - a country with kings with many beautiful concubines - there also used to be same-sex love stories. Since the Spring and Autumn - Warring States period, when it was as prosperous as the Han Dynasty, gay love affairs of emperors became more and more common.
