A serious work accident has just been successfully treated by doctors at Binh Duong General Hospital (HCMC), opening up the opportunity to restore hand function for a young pregnant woman carrying twins.
Patient LNP, nearly 20 years old, had an accident while working at a factory, causing the lower third of her right forearm to be crushed and her hand to be completely severed. After receiving first aid at a local medical facility, she was quickly transferred to Binh Duong General Hospital the same day for further treatment.
Upon admission, the mother was still conscious, not in a state of shock, and the fetus was in its 23rd week. Immediately, the hospital held an emergency interdisciplinary consultation, with the participation of the following specialists: Emergency Resuscitation, Obstetrics, Surgery - Anesthesia, Hematology - Blood Transfusion and Orthopedics. The top priority is to ensure absolute safety for the mother and twins.
However, the patient's wish was to keep his hand so that he could take care of his two children later. In response to this wish, the doctors decided on a difficult but humane solution: temporarily grafting the severed hand onto his leg, combining microsurgical vascular anastomosis, and covering the proximal forearm with a random skin flap from the abdomen. This method was to maintain blood circulation and preserve tissue while waiting for the hand to be reattached at a more appropriate time.
According to the surgical team, this is a particularly complicated intervention, requiring continuous coordination between many specialties, as well as close monitoring of the health of the mother and fetus. The surgery lasted 3 hours, during which the doctors performed vascular anastomosis to temporarily graft the hand onto the leg, while continuously checking the condition of the fetus to avoid unwanted complications.
The initial results are positive: the mother is stable, the twins are developing normally, and the preserved hand is progressing well. It is expected that when the fetus reaches 32 weeks, the doctors will perform surgery to reattach the hand.
Information about the unusual accident quickly attracted the attention of the online community. The images during the surgery surprised many people: the severed hand was temporarily grafted onto the leg, the arm was "raised" in the stomach to wait for recovery. The moment the young mother was able to hold and care for her two children with her own hands moved many people.
On social networks, thousands of comments expressed surprise and emotion. One account wrote: "Vietnamese medicine has reached an amazing level, this is only seen in science fiction but now it is happening right in our country!". Another person commented: "Hands transplanted into legs, arms grown in the abdomen - it sounds like science fiction, but doctors have done it. So amazing!"
Pride and admiration spread across forums, many people considered this a testament to the remarkable development of Vietnamese medicine. Many comments emphasized the greatest happiness that the mother will be able to directly care for her two children with her own hands in the future, considering this a "priceless gift" that the doctors have brought to the whole family.
This event is not only a medical success but also a touching story about the humanistic spirit in the profession, affirming the ability of Vietnamese medicine in handling complex accident cases, while inspiring and giving hope to the community about future medical miracles.
