Dropping out of college due to difficult circumstances, a young Co Tu man in Da Nang worked as a motorbike taxi driver to save money to buy a phone. Back home, he filmed videos of the mountains and forests, attracting tens of millions of views.
Recently, Alang Brac (born in 1996, former hometown Dong Giang district, Quang Nam, now Ben Hien commune, Da Nang city) has become a familiar name on social networking platforms thanks to his simple and genuine videos. Brac records the daily life of the Co Tu people, the culture of the mountains and forests and traditional customs, creating a special attraction for the online community.
Brac's path to content creation was not easy. While in his final year at Da Nang University of Technology, he was forced to suspend his studies due to financial difficulties. "Before dropping out of school, I planned to return to my hometown to develop a career in content creation. To start, I stayed in Da Nang and registered to drive a motorbike taxi to save money to buy a good phone for filming and taking photos. After more than half a year of driving and paying in installments, I was finally able to buy the necessary equipment and returned to my hometown to start filming," Brac shared.
Brac's films are often set in the daily life of the Dong Giang people. He records scenes of labor in the fields, such as pruning rice, tending corn, or going down to the stream to catch fish during the flood season. In addition, Brac also introduces the traditional customs of the Co Tu people, from the new rice celebration, the Doan Ngo festival, to the custom of sharing rice when going to the forest. Videos of hunting turmeric and ginger, picking bamboo shoots, or harvesting wild honey not only reflect the majesty of the mountains and forests, but also show the hardships and dangers in the daily life and work of the people.
Dangerous experiences always come with Brac's work. He said: "Once I went to look for frogs in a stream in the forest, climbed up a cliff to catch them, then suddenly a large rock fell down. If I was unlucky, the consequences would have been very serious. The most difficult thing is to exploit wild bees. This is a very dangerous bee species, no mistake is allowed, even the smallest one."
After nearly 4 years of operation, Brac owns many social media platforms with a high number of followers and interactions. His TikTok channel currently has more than 900,000 followers and more than 20 million likes, with many videos reaching tens of millions of views. Besides creating content, Brac also sells some local agricultural products such as green-heart black beans and wild honey to increase his income. However, he admits that life is still difficult, his income from content creation is not high, his house has not been improved and his debt from his school days has not been paid off.
However, being famous does not make Brac forget his responsibility to the community. He uses his influence to support people by promoting local agricultural products. Thanks to the support of Ben Hien commune government, Brac established a green-heart black bean cooperative, taking on the role of purchasing, setting good prices for people and building a brand. Recently, his green-heart black bean product has been certified with 3-star OCOP, opening up opportunities for sustainable development for his hometown's agricultural products.
Mr. Bhiryu Long, Deputy Secretary and Chairman of Ben Hien Commune People's Committee, commented: "Alang Brac is not only an innovator loved by the community but also actively supports the people. The promotion of green-heart black beans and other OCOP products makes an important contribution to poverty reduction in the locality."
