Since 2011, every winter, the Takhini hot spring in Yukon, Northern Canada has been busy organizing the Hair Freezing Contest. Many people around the world are extremely curious, even going to Canada because they want to experience this interesting thing.
Winter is the last days of the year with many special meanings. For many people, it is an opportunity to be lazy, just sit next to a warm fireplace to enjoy the feeling that only comes once a year. Others love running outside, mixing with the cold air to play in the snow. In Canada, a country where winter always has negative temperatures, it seems that people are tired of enjoying a boring cold season, so a game was born here. At the Takhini Hot Springs in Yukon, Canada, the International Hair Freezing competition was born. This is considered an eccentric contest but full of fun and excitement.
Originally, people in Yukan loved winter and wanted to enjoy it to the fullest, so they came up with this unique competition.
The International Hair Freezing Competition is a hair sculpting competition held at a resort in Takhini Hot Springs, Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.
The International Hair Freezing Competition is a hair sculpting competition held at a resort in Takhini Hot Springs, Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. The annual competition involves participants sitting in hot springs and sculpting their wet hair in cold temperatures. After about a minute, the hair freezes. The shape of their hair at that time will represent their entry.
The first international hair freezing competition took place in February 2011 as a spin-off of the local Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous.
Specifically, after competing all day in winter sports events, athletes from the meeting point will go to Takhini to take a mineral bath in one of the pools provided by the area's natural hot springs. The manager at the time turned the relaxation session into another competition when he asked bathers to turn their wet hair into frozen works of art. In the end, whoever has the best selfie will win the contest.
It is known that Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous is a typical Canadian festival with many strange activities such as hair freezing, ax throwing, vegetable growing and most especially, traveling performances by dancers from Snow Shoe. Shufflers and Rendezvous Can Can are famous today. It is these unique outdoor games that make Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous known as "the coldest winter festival in the North". When traveling to Canada, tourists are often encouraged to participate in this festival.
Thanks to that first impression, it created a very positive effect on many participants and witnesses. So what grew from a small activity has now become a major competition taking place at the annual Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous festival. Every winter, there are more people. So that everyone can freely choose a suitable test date, the contest has continued continuously throughout February. This is also traditionally the coldest time of year for this remote part of Canada.
The specific process is that after successful registration, participants will be led to the natural hot spring. The temperature here is about 104°F (40°C). Participants can then sculpt and shape the hair into frozen masterpieces and take a few photos to deliver to hot spring officials. After that, the player needs to quickly dip into warm water to restore the hair to its original beauty. However, contestants are warned that all hair - facial, eyebrows and even eyelashes - must also be thawed.
Participating contestants are given free passes to the resort's swimming pool, and have 1 month to post photos of themselves with frozen hair on the contest's Facebook page. Milena Geogeault and friends were last year's winners - they "styled" their hair "tousled".
In addition to the "Most Creative" award, Takhini also has 4 other competition categories: "Most Unique Men's Hair", "Most Unique Women's Hair", "Best Hairstyle Group" and "People's Choice". As for the "Everyone votes" section, it is based on online scoring. The hot spring's manager posted "frozen hair competitions" on the website, asking viewers around the world to vote for the best image.
The first condition of the Hair Freezing Contest is that the hair must be completely frozen. "Hair dipped in hot water encounters cold air, freezing extremely quickly," explains Takhini co-owner Andrew Umbrich. "If the weather is good enough, contestants can complete their hair styling in just 15 minutes."
Designing frozen hair is both an art and a science. Many people can only shape their hair into a rag-like shape, but others can make it look like a sculptural masterpiece.
According to resort manager - Mr. Andrew Umbrich shared - the purpose of the contest is to record the most creative and beautiful hairstyles. The big difference compared to other competitions is that you have to soak in a hot spring and the steam will accumulate on your hair strands at an outside temperature of -15 degrees Celsius, when unique hairstyles will appear. most will be frozen.
Although the nature of the contest is somewhat strange and no other country organizes a contest like this. That's why this contest is an extremely interesting symbolic part of Canadian culture.
