Xuân Mai 's father in the US humorously revealed, "I'm currently unemployed," unexpectedly reminiscing about their difficult youth, the impoverished days of singing, and their journey to becoming famous Bolero singers overseas.
During a visit to comedian Thuy Nga's home, singer Mai Thien Van had the opportunity to reunite with singer Tuan Canh – the biological father of Xuan Mai, much to the delight of both. This reunion was particularly special as they realized it had been a long time since they last saw each other.
As soon as he saw Mai Thien Van, Tuan Canh happily chatted with her and didn't forget to ask, "It must be fate that I meet Mai Thien Van. Could you book a trip for me and my wife sometime? I'm unemployed and have too much free time, so I want to go on a trip." His humorous remark made the atmosphere friendly and cheerful.
Mai Thien Van immediately explained with a smile: "It's just that Tuan Canh is too rich to sell pho, not that he's unemployed. Tuan Canh is very chivalrous. Back in the day, my brother and I used to perform and record together. That was in 2003, I was still in Vietnam and not yet famous, it's been over 20 years. He's both a singer and a chef, very good at cooking, that's why he was able to open a restaurant. He's very funny, a true comedian."
She further shared about her first reunion with Tuan Canh in the US: "It wasn't until much later, when I went to the US, that I met Tuan Canh again at his pho restaurant. I was so happy to see someone who had helped me before."
Tuan Canh also recalled old memories: "Back then, we used to sing at the Trong Dong stage, 126, it was so much fun! I remember one time, after singing with Mai Thien Van, my sister-in-law cooked crab soup but left the crab shells and carcasses in it. We were poor back then, but we had so much fun. We even rode our Honda motorbikes to go to performances together. Now Mai Thien Van is rich, and I'm still very poor, but I still feel happy. Mai Thien Van is both fun and rich."
Hearing Tuan Canh's words, Mai Thien Van immediately intervened, hesitant to reveal his wealth: "Mr. Tuan Canh owns a pho restaurant, he's just too tired to do it anymore." Tuan Canh also honestly shared: "Actually, I still think I'll work until I'm 80 or 90 years old, I'm just taking a temporary break."
Born into a poor family in the Mekong Delta, Mai Thien Van went to Saigon alone to study and sing for various organizations to make a living. After settling in the United States, she was promoted by many and quickly became a famous Bolero singer. With her warm, emotional voice, Mai Thien Van is currently the most sought-after Bolero singer overseas, with a fully booked schedule every week.
Besides her music career, Mai Thien Van has also developed a business in the tourism sector. She opened her own travel company, personally leading tours and managing operations quite professionally, generating stable revenue. Comedian Hoai Tam once commented: "So many people who started in the tourism business have failed, only Quang Le and Mai Thien Van have succeeded." This shows her business acumen and flexibility in combining art with business.
The reunion between Mai Thien Van and Tuan Canh was not only an opportunity to reminisce about the past, but also showcased their close friendship and professional bond that has endured over time. Through their story, the audience can see the difficult but joyful years, the efforts, and the talent that helped them achieve success today.
