Known as a fashion trendsetter, it is no surprise that many beauty trends similar to Jennie ( BLACKPINK ) are enthusiastically responded to and even imitated by everyone. However, recently, the "Jennie's shoulder" beauty trend is causing controversy.
In Kpop in particular and in the world in general, Jennie (Blackpink) is not only known for her voice and attractive performance style but also for her fashionable appearance, always leading the trend. Recently, a physical feature of the female singer has accidentally become a "standard" that many people seek cosmetic methods to imitate. That is Jennie's slim, angular shoulders.
To achieve âJennieâs shoulders,â many people opt for filler injections, a common procedure in the cosmetic industry. Some also combine it with Barbie Botox or Trap Botox, a technique that relaxes the trapezius muscles, making the shoulders and neck appear longer and slimmer.
According to cosmetic experts, this technique is not new and has been used in Korea for many years. However, associating it with Jennie's name has caused the trend to explode again, attracting young customers, especially Kpop fans. Many cosmetic clinics in Seoul even advertise their services with the phrase "Jennie's shoulder" to reach this group of customers.
The trend's rapid spread began with a TikTok video by content creator Yunny. In the clip, she went to a cosmetic clinic in Seoul to get filler injections to shape her shoulders like Jennie's. After a few injections, Yunny happily boasted that her shoulders were "clearly lifted" and looked slimmer. The video quickly attracted millions of views, followed by a series of comments, shares, and imitation videos.
Despite the interest of many people, this trend has also received mixed opinions. Some netizens believe that this is a "shortcut" to achieve the desired appearance, instead of working hard to improve the body shape naturally.
One account commented: "Just exercise and you will have shoulders like Jennie for free." Another sarcastically said: "At this rate, everyone will be injecting fillers all over their bodies."
Besides, there are concerns that idolizing the appearance of celebrities can make young people easily fall into a spiral of comparison and lose confidence in their own inherent beauty.
However, it is undeniable that many people still choose this method because of its quick results, short recovery time and direct impact on appearance. Cosmetic institutes advertise that this procedure only takes a few dozen minutes, the effect lasts from several months to more than a year, depending on the individual.
There is currently no research confirming that shoulder filler injections pose serious health risks if performed by a skilled doctor and reputable facility. However, medical experts warn that any invasive procedure carries risks, from swelling and bruising to allergic reactions or infections.
More importantly, following beauty trends based on celebrity influence can have long-term psychological consequences. Many studies have shown that the pressure to maintain a socially acceptable appearance can lead to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, or cosmetic surgery addiction.
What these trends have in common is that they all originate from celebrity images or viral videos on social media. The power of digital media makes it take only a few days for new trends to spread, attracting a large number of young people to try them out.
However, many people believe that this reflects a worrying reality: beauty standards are becoming increasingly strict and constantly changing, forcing many people to find ways to "follow the trend" and not fall behind.
Cosmetic surgeons recommend that before deciding to undergo any cosmetic procedure, it is necessary to thoroughly understand the procedure, risks, and facilities. At the same time, consumers should consider whether changing their appearance comes from a genuine personal need or just a desire to follow a short-term trend.
"There's nothing wrong with wanting to improve your appearance, but make sure you do it for yourself, not because of pressure from social media or to look like someone else," says Dr. Kim Soo Jin, a Seoul-based plastic surgeon.
