Doctor Thinh was born into a farming family in Vinh Thanh district, Can Tho. He had a poor childhood and unfavorable educational conditions.

He said, during the harvest season, the teachers were busy with farming and did not come to class to teach. Students in the countryside prefer to go fishing and fly kites than going to school.

Doctor Thinh also enjoys playing like his friends but does not forget his academic duties. After finishing 9th grade, he packed his bags and went to the city. Can Tho lives in boarding school because there is no high school in the countryside.

"While my friends stopped going to school to work rice and some of them got married, I went to the province to study with countless economic difficulties.

At that time, I lived in a room with 6-7 people. Every day, we took turns going to the market with a small amount of money," Dr. Thinh recalled.

On weekends, when he came home to visit, his mother packed him rice and fish... full. This is my happiest time. Because, at the end of 10th grade, his mother developed cancer and passed away.

Before passing away, his mother told him to try to study and pursue a medical career to save people. That advice always illuminated his long path of studying and taking exams.

His mother passed away, and his father single-handedly raised his 5 children. He often reminds his children: "After finishing 12th grade, whoever passes the university entrance exam will be able to continue studying, and whoever fails will have to stay home and work on rice."

Therefore, Dr. Thinh's brothers worked hard to study and consecutively passed university entrance exams. In turn, he took the exam at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Dr. Thinh said: "At that time, I planned to study at whichever school I passed. I received the admission notice to the Polytechnic University first and thought I failed the University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

When I was preparing to enter Polytechnic, I received the admission letter from the Medicine and Pharmacy department. Without thinking, I happily studied medicine as my mother told me."

To have money to pay tuition, Dr. Thinh worked as a tutor, arranged chairs at the theater, ran events... During the Tet season, he returned to Ho Chi Minh City with 250,000 VND in his pocket.

After 2-3 years of studying, the poor student met doctor Ngoc Phuong (Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City). The female doctor was the one who introduced Mr. Thinh to study abroad in France.

During 2 years of studying abroad, Dr. Thinh specialized in Cosmetic Surgery. However, when he returned home, he chose to work in the Obstetrics Department, Tu Du Hospital.

While working at the Obstetrics Department, he witnessed infertile couples desiring to have children. From then on, he determined to study infertility in depth.
