Ba Thang was born and raised in a family with a tradition of performing arts. His mother was a traditional opera artist. After finishing high school, Ba Thang intended to take the entrance exam to the College of Culture and Arts, but heeded his mother's advice and changed his direction to study Computer Engineering because he was afraid that working in art would make life very unstable.

Although he graduated with an engineering degree, Ba Thang was still attracted to art. That was when he decided to go to Saigon to take the entrance exam to the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music. The first year, Ba Thang failed. The following year, he took the entrance exam to two schools at the same time and passed the College of Theater and Cinema but still failed the Conservatory of Music.

His parents only gave him 500,000 VND per month. That was just enough to pay for his rent. So Ba Thang was stuck between two paths, either using that money to live or studying art.

"There were times when I was so broke that I only had 2,000 VND left in my pocket. I ran out to buy a loaf of bread to eat with butter. I accepted to sing in tea rooms for 40,000 or 50,000 VND a night, just hoping that some show producer would discover me," Ba Thang once told the newspaper Mot va Cuoc song.

The first time Ba Thang was invited to sing was at a club on Saturday afternoon. After singing, he was given flowers and an envelope. Because he was so happy, while taking pictures, he "ran wildly" dropped the envelope containing his fee.

Ba Thang used to work as a security guard and looked after a clothing store for designer Nguyen Long with a monthly salary of 800,000 VND. There, he met designer Viet Hung and was introduced to work as a model for magazines.

Thanks to this opportunity, Ba Thang won advertising contracts. With money, he devoted all his efforts to making a music album. The album was enthusiastically received by the audience, thanks to which Ba Thang had the motivation to continue pursuing art.

Ba Thang emerged in the late 2000s. There was a time when Ba Thang, Luong The Thanh and Hoa Hiep formed a band and toured everywhere. As a singer, he was loved for many songs such as: Noi Nho Chua Voi, Noi Sau Dem Vang,... especially Buddhist music.

Although he graduated from the Academy of Theatre and Cinema, at first no one invited Ba Thang to act in films. Nearly 2 years later, Meritorious Artist Cong Ninh "gathered" the class and brought them to perform at the 5B Vo Van Tan stage. By chance, director Xuan Cuong went to see it. At that time, he was recruiting actors for the film Goi Giac Mo Ve. Ba Thang's relationship with films began from that time.

Although he was criticized by teachers and friends as "a mobile vase, only good looking, no acting talent", Ba Thang left a deep impression on the audience through many popular TV series, including: Calling Back the Dream, Gate of the Sun, A Day Without You,...

Although he is a well-known name, Ba Thang once had a difficult time in his career.

For a long time, he had almost no income because he did not perform. Ba Thang decided to find another job. He cooperated with actor Hoa Hiep to run a milk tea shop to make ends meet.
