Artist Hong Nga's life in Vietnam is extremely difficult. At the age of 80, Hong Nga is so sick that she no longer recognizes people, living in a lonely situation because she has no children to take care of her, making everyone sad.
In the memories of many generations of audiences who love Cai Luong, the name Hong Nga is associated with transformative roles, from peach smell, peach cage, poison peach to the role of a poor mother or a benevolent queen. In each role, the talented female artist born in 1945 has left a deep mark, making viewers sometimes hate the character, sometimes sympathize with tears. However, after the glory of the stage, her personal life is a long series of stories and many sadness.
A multi-talented Cai Luong artist at one time
Hong Nga's real name is Dinh Thi Nga. She started her career in the 1960s and quickly became a bright face of Southern Cai Luong before 1975. At the same time as golden names such as Snow White, Ngoc Giau, Le Thuy, Phuong Lien, artist Hong Nga is considered one of the rare female faces who can fully transform into many different roles.
If the audience has ever shuddered at a fierce and sinister Hong Nga in a series of poisonous digging roles, they are also easily moved by the image of a poor, blue mother that she portrays. The diversity in acting has helped Hong Nga create her own brand, making her an indispensable name in big singing groups.
Her famous performances such as Heaven's Net, My Eyes Are the Sheep's Pool, Qin Shi Huang, The Last Minute, The Dumb Man and The Beauty ... until now, it is still loved by the audience. In addition to Cai Luong, she also encroached on comedy and quickly made her mark thanks to her charm, witty and close performance.
Not only sticking to art, Hong Nga also devotes herself to volunteer activities. She often appears in shows to raise funds for storm and flood relief, support lonely anchors, and show the compassion of an artist attached to the community.
The love path is full of stories
In contrast to her brilliant career, Hong Nga's love affair is turbulent. The first marriage was incomplete, causing her to share in tears with her close friend â the late artist Kim Ngoc. The two used to lie together many times and cry because they "married a shameful husband".
In 1976, she took another step with composer Moc Linh. But the happiness did not last long when he suddenly died, leaving her as a widow from a very young age. Since then, the female artist decided to stay there, devoting all her energy to her children and the stage.
Hong Nga has a son and a daughter who are currently living in the US. A few years ago, she went to the US to live with her children, but life in the country was not as expected. She once choked up and shared that she had to live in a room of only 8m² with her daughter, without shows, without friends, mentally falling into sadness and loneliness.
After that, she moved in with her son but did not suit her way of life, leading to many conflicts. She said in one confession: "My children don't care about me. When it was time to eat, I gave him a bowl of rice, left it there and left. I'm old, so I often forget, but I can't forget it."
Feeling unable to find harmony, artist Hong Nga decided to return to Vietnam after more than a year away from her hometown.
Returning to Vietnam in a simple small house
Currently, Hong Nga lives alone in an old, simple house in Ho Chi Minh City. HCM. Despite her material deprivation and loneliness, she still finds joy in meeting colleagues and juniors. Many young artists occasionally visit, take her out to eat and chat. Occasionally, she also participates in a few small shows, standing on the stage â which used to be the flesh and blood of her life.
However, her health was getting weaker and weaker. At the age of 80, artist Hong Nga faces a series of old age diseases: knee joints make her unable to walk on her own, memory deterioration so severe that it is difficult to recognize relatives, slurred speech, personal activities completely dependent on others. She often lost sleep, her body was thin and pale.
Especially, in the rare moments when listening to Cai Luong music, she still quietly sings her voice. It is a testament to the burning love of art that is still intact in the soul of the artist who has devoted his life to the stage.
Lucky with a dedicated caregiver
For more than 20 years, Hong Nga has been fortunate to have Ms. Nguyen Thi Bay â a woman who is attached and takes care of her like a biological relative. It is this silent sacrifice that helps the veteran female artist somewhat relieve her loneliness and have a place to support in old age.
That care is not only about taking care of each meal and sleep, but also a spiritual comfort, so that she can feel that there are still people who love and care. For an artist who has lived in the spotlight all his life, this companionship has great meaning.
The story of artist Hong Nga is not an isolated case. Many artists of Cai Luong, drama, music... Once brilliant, now we have to face old age and illness and loneliness when the glory has receded.
The audience still remembers them through their lifelong roles, but the reality is harsh: weak health, struggling life, lack of friendship. That image makes the public rejuvenate and raise the question: what should society, the artist community and theater lovers do to support and thank the seniors who have devoted their lives to art?
Although the current is full of difficulties, no one can deny the role and contribution of artist Hong Nga to Vietnam's reform. She is a vivid demonstration of multi-talentedness, dedicated to her profession. From the poisonous peach to the clown, from the poor country mother to the benevolent queen â all of it is expressed by her heart and dedication.
In the minds of the audience, she is not only a talented artist but also a symbol of resilience and overcoming adversity. Although her personal life is full of stories, Hong Nga still retains her love for the profession, always ready to sing when she has the opportunity.
At the age of 80, although her body is thin and her memory has faded, every time an ancient echo rings, she feels like returning to the golden age â a proof that art is immortal, and that people, although finite, can still leave values that live forever with time.
