According to the latest assessment of the famous transfer website Transfermarkt, Nguyen Xuan Son is valued at 700,000 euros, becoming the Vietnamese player with the highest transfer value in history. In addition, he is also in the Top 15 players with the highest transfer value in Southeast Asian football.

Statistics from Transfermarkt show that the top 6 positions all belong to Indonesian players, including Mies Hilgers (9 million euros, nearly 13 times the value of Xuan Son), Kevin Diks (4.5 million euros), Jay Idzes (3 million euros), Calvin Verdonk (2.5 million euros), Marten Paes (1.8 million euros), Thom Haye (1.5 million euros). This is understandable because these strikers are all naturalized stars, playing in Europe.

Positions 7 and 8 in the Top 15 list are 2 Thai players, Supachai Jaided (1.2 million euros) and Chanathip Songkrasin (1 million euros). The next positions are Sandy Walsh (Indonesia, 1 million euros), Dion Cools (Malaysia, 800,000 euros), Supachoke Sarachat (Thailand, 800,000 euros), Suphanat Mueanta (800,000 euros), Jordi Amat (Indonesia, 750,000 euros), Gerrit Holtmann (Philippines, 700,000 euros) and Nguyen Xuan Son (Vietnam, 700,000 euros).

In the above list, many names were absent from the AFF Cup 2024, especially the naturalized stars of Indonesia, along with the duo Supachai - Chanathip of Thailand. This is one of the reasons why the Indonesian and Thai teams cannot compete for the championship with the Vietnamese team.

Of course, transfer value is only one of the factors to evaluate the development of football or each national team. As in Southeast Asia, the total transfer value of the Indonesian team is far greater than that of the Vietnamese team, but that is not proportional to the difference in level between the two national teams.
