Van Dong: The Voice VN's blind guy married a 1m25 tall woman 14 years younger than him

Not only does he sing well, Ha Van Dong also knows how to warm up the stage in his performance like a true artist. After The Voice - The Voice of Vietnam 2012, his life has had many positive changes.

In 2012, at the show "The Voice of Vietnam", Ha Van Dong impressed with the song "Soul of Stone" in the Blind Audition round and then joined the team of the late musician Tran Lap. Although he stopped at the Confrontation round, the small, skinny blind boy left many impressions with his strong, "fiery" voice.

Van Dong was born in 1992 in Hai Duong and was born blind. Van Dong attracted public attention when he participated in The Voice 2012.

His wife, Thanh Hang (born in 1978), is considered the smallest singer in Vietnam today, standing at only 1m25 tall. The couple got married at the end of December last year.

Recently, Van Dong had the opportunity to share about his life story as well as his love affair with his wife who is 14 years older than him.

Hit the car, thrown about 10 meters

During the program, Van Dong confided to MC Phan Nhu Thao: "I was born with the love of my parents, siblings, friends and teachers, so I didn't notice much difference. Until everyone lined up to receive their first grade papers, I couldn't get them. My friends went to first grade, but I stayed in kindergarten.

At that time, I just thought, why can my friends go to school but I can't? They can go here and there but I have to stay at home all day. Because I was young, I just felt a little sad about that.

I started school at the age of 9. I lived in a home for the blind. In addition to studying culture, I could learn vocational skills such as music, massage... I only came home once a month. Since the age of 9, I was independent, folding blankets, washing clothes, washing dishes, mopping and sweeping the floor... At the age of 16, I moved to Saigon.

When I arrived in Saigon, the hardest thing was to hold my cane and go out to catch the bus. I was very scared but I had no other choice.

The first time, I was going too fast and crashed into their car parked on the side of the road and I was thrown about 10 meters away. At that time, I had no experience. Thanks to those times, I have better navigation skills and better driving skills."

Sharing about the difficulties in his artistic career, he said: "Because I can't see, I don't understand body language. This profession requires body language, and blind people are at a disadvantage in that regard. Moreover, I'm just passionate and haven't had the chance to study properly.

The first time I stood on a big stage, in front of about 5,000 people, was at The Voice music gala in 2012. I participated and won a relatively high prize, at that time I didn't think I would be so well received by everyone."

The "slow and steady wins the race" campaign to woo a 14-year-older woman

Van Dong met his wife - singer Thanh Hang during a recording session for a charity organization and then many other events and programs. In 2016, they both had the opportunity to tour in the US and support each other more. When they returned to Vietnam, they kept in touch and considered each other friends, supporting each other in life as well as music.

In the rainy season of 2022, Van Dong decided to sell goods at a beer house in the evening. On days when he came home from work, he suddenly felt sad and longed for a lover and a family. In that longing, the image of Thanh Hang always appeared in his mind.

He said: "The rainy season is very cold. The purpose of selling goods is to make a living, but I asked myself, what do I earn money for? Suddenly I longed to have a family.

If I come home from work, it's cold and rainy like this, just having someone put their hand on my forehead is already very happy, not to mention having someone make me a bowl of noodles, a glass of hot lemonade or ginger water... it's wonderful.

When I wanted to do that, Hang's image appeared more often, Hang's care and concern kept appearing in my mind. At that time, I thought I had a problem because Hang was my best friend, so why did I think that. I was so wrong.

I kept thinking and thinking about whether this was an illusion or not. After a few months, when I answered many questions I asked myself, I thought, this is exactly the person I've been looking for.

After determining the target, I thought about approaching. I thought a lot because if I did not do it carefully, I would lose a long-standing friendship.

One day, I thought, no matter what, I have to say it because if I don't say it, it will be very uncomfortable. It took me several hours to compose the message to Hang. Even though the message wasn't long, I had to think about each sentence and word. After I finished composing and sending it to Hang, I immediately turned off my phone, nervous, afraid of not knowing how to answer.

I sent it last night, and the next morning when I turned on my phone, I still hadn't seen Hang's reply. I acted like I didn't know anything and continued with my daily work, but I thought about it a lot every day.

It took nearly a week for Hang to reply. At first, Hang also answered ambiguously, as if she hadn't thought about it... I thought, if Hang answered like that, my success rate would be 60%. From then on, I started talking more. Morning, noon, evening... I followed the slow and steady campaign. About 1-2 months later, Hang agreed."
