At the same time, Tyla attended school to study for a degree in Mining Engineering but tried to convince and "cried a lot" to get her parents to agree to let her take a year off to try to revive her music career. She then signed a recording contract with Epic Records through a joint venture with Fax Records in the United States in May 2021.

That same year, Tyla's career really took off when the music video for the song "Getting Late" was released and quickly became a musical phenomenon not only in South Africa but all over the world. Continuing her success, she released the singles "Overdue" in October 2021 and "To Last" in November 2022.

Tyla's first public performance was in 2023 at a Dolce & Gabbana after-party at Milan Fashion Week, following the release of her single "Been Thinking", which earned her her first Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Rhythmic Airplay chart entries.

Pitchfork's Heven Haile described "Been Thinking" as "a slick club theme song, channeling the seductive pop-R&B hits of Ciara and Rihanna in the mid-2000s". Tyla later collaborated with Chris Brown as the opening act for his Under the Influence tour.

In May 2023, the singer released the single "Girl Next Door", featuring Nigerian singer Ayra Starr. In July of the same year, she released the song "Water" as the lead single from her self-titled debut studio album.

Thanks to "Water", Tyla conquered global audiences and affirmed her position on the international stage. This song not only made waves in the singer's home country but also entered the top 10 in many other countries, including major music markets such as the UK and the US.

In particular, "Water" made history as it became the first song by a South African solo artist to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years and won the Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Tyla also made history as the youngest African artist to win a Grammy. In addition, the 2002-born singer also owns a series of other prestigious awards, including an MTV Video Music Award, two BET Awards, and an honorary Global Force Award at Billboard R&B.

Additionally, Tyla has been nominated for prestigious awards such as the Brit Award, Ivor Novello Award, Soul Train Music Award, and has been honored with nine South African music awards.

Tyla's self-titled debut album was released on March 22, 2024, through Fax and Epic Records. The single "Art" and its accompanying music video were released alongside the album, earning Tyla widespread critical acclaim and charting within the top 25 in the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, and Switzerland.

Recently, Tyla's fans expressed excitement when the pop star shared a photo with Lisa, a member of the famous girl group BLACKPINK, after the Victoria's Secret show.
