Despite continuously topping the charts, Jennie's new song still faces mixed opinions. Similar to Lisa's ROCKSTAR, " Mantra" was also criticized for having meaningless lyrics.
On October 11, Jennie released the single "Mantra", expressing her confidence with the message: "Love yourself as you are". Besides, through this song, she also wants listeners to feel positive energy.
Despite its catchy melody, easy-to-understand lyrics, and Jennie's unique flow of combining singing with rapping, "Mantra" still received mixed reviews. Critics pointed out that the female idol's image in the new song's MV was too sexy and that the music itself divided opinions among listeners.
The review site The Bias List even gave "Mantra" an extremely low score of 4.75/10. The site frankly said that Jennie has a limited solo single list, both in quantity and quality, and asked the question: "Is there any K-pop artist as successful as BLACKPINK while singing about such superficial topics throughout their career?".
She describes "Mantra" as "a cheerful and optimistic anthem that celebrates female empowerment and inspires women to shine with confidence," but it's no better than Lisa's "ROCKSTAR." The song seems hollow because it focuses too much on beauty, lavish parties, and the artist "destroying" her.
Lines like "This is the mantra for pretty girls, showing off like this when they just landed in LA" or "Pretty girls in fancy cars, we know how to protect each other, so no one gets lost" are repeated throughout the song.
Not only were the lyrics criticized for being meaningless, but the visuals in Jennie's MV "Mantra" also caused controversy. With blonde hair and a bold outfit, the female idol showed off her charm through sexy dance moves. Although she had shown this side before, the new product highlighted her provocative appearance even more.
And that has caused a lot of constant debate. Typically, the post about the revealing outfit of the main rapper of BLACKPINK, on a forum, has received many different comments. Some expressed dissatisfaction with her style.
"This isn't new; she's always liked to dress like this"; "It may be popular overseas, but it looks cheap and tacky"; "Jennie promotes the idea that beautiful women take care of themselves, not just their looks, but her current image seems to contradict that"... are some of the comments from netizens.
Despite the controversy surrounding her sexy image, Jennie's "brainchild" has been quite successful. According to The Korea Times, she topped the iTunes charts in 47 countries, including the United States.
Not stopping there, the music video for "Mantra" has also attracted attention on YouTube, ranking among the top trending videos in both South Korea and the United States. On Melon, the largest music streaming platform in the country, the song ranked 15th as of 7 p.m. on October 12.
The highest ranking of "Mantra" on local music platforms, as of the afternoon of October 12, was No. 2 on Bugs, while it was ranked No. 10 on Genie. Jennie's new song is expected to "climb" higher in the coming days.
Most recently, the 28-year-old female rapper continued to stir up controversy when she posted photos of herself wearing daring outfits, including low-cut fashion and revealing underwear on her personal Instagram account. This combination creates a look that is both sporty and casual, but still very luxurious and sexy.
In the promotional material for her new solo single "Mantra," Jennie opted for a cowboy-inspired look with a plaid tweed jacket, short shorts, a hat, and black boots. Another outfit she promoted was a feminine sheer blouse, layered underwear, and a garter belt paired with bright orange stockings.
