As K-pop stars continue to gain global popularity and wider recognition in the music industry, fans have set higher expectations for live performances.
However, people in the music industry explain that K-pop idols are almost impossible to sing perfectly because they have to do a lot of choreography. The challenge lies in how they combine their pre-recorded vocals with live vocals on stage.
On September 28, Lisa was one of the performers at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City (USA). Here, the female idol performed songs such as Lalisa, Money, Rockstar and New Woman. She also introduced her upcoming self-titled song - Moonlit Floor. Korea JoongAng Daily reported that after the event ended, the online community criticized Lisa for lip-syncing.
Online viewers thought that Lisa was too reliant on pre-recorded tracks and only sang part of the song even though her Moonlit Floor performance didn't have much choreography.
Many comments directed at Lisa's performance appeared under articles by Korean newspapers. This is not the first time Lisa has faced lip-syncing charges. The singer was involved in a similar controversy when performing at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards in September.
The New York Post commented that Lisa's performance was ranked among the worst along with Eminem, Katy Perry, Megan The Stallion and Camila Cabello. Billboard ranked Lisa's performance at the end of the list and commented, Lisa no longer has the same shining performances as when performing in the group Blackpink.
Pop critic Kim Do Heon said that lip-syncing is a frequent problem throughout the history of popular music. Even world-famous artists rarely sing live during choreographed performances, such as the NFL Super Bowl halftime show.
But with the advancement of AR technology and the artist's experience accumulated over time, the concept of live performance has become increasingly blurred, especially as live singing on pre-recorded vocals has become more and more common.
Surprisingly, most K-pop idols are said to only sing 10-20% of their songs live on stage, whether in pre-recorded music shows, press conferences, or even concerts that tour the world.
Music critic Lim Hee Yun said that currently live performances by K-pop artists are very different from the concept of traditional live performances. Even at concerts, K-pop idols mainly rely on pre-recorded vocals, they only sing a small part live.
"K-pop combines music and performance, the artist may not sing every verse while dancing, because choreography is an integral part of their performance," an official told the Korea Herald.
LE SSERAFIM - HYBE's popular girl group was accused of lip-syncing on the stage of the Coachella music festival in the US in April.
When criticized harshly for their poor live vocals in their first appearance, in the 2nd week the group replaced live singing with AR music, making it difficult for the audience to determine whether this was live singing or pre-recorded.
Critic Lim Hee Yun said that it is difficult to judge whether K-pop idols lip-syncing is wrong or right. "A singer cannot maintain the stability of pitch when performing strong choreography.
Even legendary pop stars like Michael Jackson and Madonna lip-synced during performances. Especially after MTV came out in 1981 and videos focused on choreography became popular," he said. Lim Hee Yun added that artists who perform at multiple events on the same day may not always maintain the best vocal condition, making lip-syncing a realistic option.
