From the feudal period, the ancients believed that if ancestors' graves were well built, their descendants would be promoted to positions and prosper for many generations.
Therefore, the Chinese feudal kings paid great attention to feng shui the location of the tomb, even choosing the location of the mausoleum right from the time of the throne.
Although Empress Dowager Tu Xi was not an emperor, she implicitly held all the power of the Qing Dynasty in her hands, she also valued the construction of graves like any king.
According to legend, when she was about to enter her forties, Empress Dowager Tu Xi began ordering the mobilization of human and financial resources to build her tomb.
The person she assigned to this important task was Thuan Than Vuong Dich Hoan - the younger brother of Emperor Ham Phong and also the biological father of King Quang Tu.
The fact that Empress Dowager Tay invited an important figure in the royal family to help her build the mausoleum was enough to show how much she valued her resting place.
Not stopping there, there is an anecdote that Tu Hy Tomb in Dinh Dong Lang was built on a piece of land with excellent feng shui. Legend has it that this precious land was once chosen by Emperor Dong Tri for Tu Hy to personally choose.
During the construction of the mausoleum, Tu Hy mobilized a huge amount of both human and financial resources. Therefore, her resting place when she was just completed had a splendid and magnificent appearance that was not inferior to the palace.
According to the old history, Tu Hy's tomb took many years to complete. When visiting this place to inspect, the Queen Mother was basically satisfied, only one thing displeased her: It was because the soil in this place grew too many weeds.
Therefore, Tu Xi made a request that the top part of the tomb should not grow a single blade of grass. However, the top of the tombs at that time was still covered with a layer of soil, and with soil there would be weeds.
To please the empress dowager, Thuan Than Vuong Dich Hoan applied esoteric methods from the mausoleums of the Tay Ha dynasty. Accordingly, he had people bring up to 100 large pots, then put all the soil that will be covered above the tomb into the pot and flipped back and forth on high fire.
This process, although causing the soil to gradually lose nutrients, does not completely eliminate the risk of weeds growing.
So the workers then mixed all this soil with sulfur to make it impossible for weeds to grow. Through this method, the land above Tu Hy's tomb has never been in a green state.
After her death in 1908, Empress Dowager Cixi was buried in a luxurious mausoleum filled with treasures that she had worked so hard to prepare during her lifetime.
Unfortunately, in 1928, tomb thief Ton Dien Anh entered and stole all the treasures. Legend has it that, at the time when the empress Dowager Tay's tomb was stolen, her body had not yet decomposed. There is an opinion that Tu Hy's body is so perfectly preserved that it is strange because the night pearl possessing inter-city value was placed in her mouth.
It is said that, after Tu Hy's body was just taken from the night pearl, he met the wind, and Tu Hy's face turned into a dry skeleton in the blink of an eye.
According to legend, when entering the burial, Tu Hy wore a phoenix hat, on which was attached a pearl the size of a chicken egg, according to the contemporary price of more than 10 million taels of white silver. In Tu Hy's mouth holds a pearl, it is said that it can glow in the night from outside 100 steps; on his neck he wears 3 chains, of which 2 are made of pearls and 1 are made of pink gems; dressed in vestments woven of golden silk; hand holding a jade lotus branch.
In addition, next to the body, there are also burial items such as gold and jade Buddha statues; items of coral, precious stones of all kinds. It is said that after removing the burial items, seeing that the coffin still had a gap, the burial officials added 4 boxes of pearls and 2,200 pieces of red, blue, and green stones. This "filling in the blank" treasure alone is worth 2.23 million taels of white silver.
Remember in the past, Tu Hy used to spend 5 million taels of white silver to build this magnificent resting place, not to mention the number of treasures that were buried according to the Empress Dowager, while the court had to deal with enemies inside and outside.
Because of that, many people believe that all calamities that happen to the tomb are a harbinger of bad things in life.
