At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Empress Dowager Cixi was always considered a figure "standing above ten thousand people", the person in charge of the Qing Dynasty. Possessing supreme power, Tu Hi makes many people fear and dare to disobey her wishes.
However, at that time there were people who were not only not afraid but also repeatedly pointed out Tu Hi's mistakes without any hesitation. Notably, this person's actions did not make this most powerful Queen Mother displeased but were extremely respectful. According to historical records, this character is the last princess of the Dai Qing dynasty, known as Princess Vinh Tho Co Luan (also known as Princess Vinh Tho or Great Princess), daughter of Cung Prince Dich Han.
Princess Vinh Tho (1854 - 1924) is known as the eldest daughter of Prince Dich Han, the right hand of Queen Mother Ci Hi. In the 11th year of Ham Phong, Tu Hi called Dich Han's eldest daughter into the palace and adopted her as her adopted daughter, taking the title of Princess Vinh Tho. Then, in the year of Quang Tu, this princess was further crowned Princess Vinh Tho Co Luan and enjoyed countless benefits such as a golden palanquin and 800 taels of white silver.
When the princess was 12 years old, Empress Dowager Cixi personally selected her husband-in-law. On the day of the blind date, the princess chose Phu Sat Chi Doan, son of the Manchu prince Phu Sat Canh Tho, to be her son-in-law. This was said to be a rare privilege in feudal times when the princess could choose her own husband.
Unfortunately, despite being married to the person she wanted, after only 5 years, Princess Vinh Tho was left alone when her husband-in-law passed away prematurely. From then on, the princess became a widow at the age of 17 and then remained secretive for 53 years until her death.
Becoming a widow at such a young age made Vinh Tho's life increasingly dull. For that reason, the princess was often called by Empress Dowager Cixi to stay in the palace for company. Although she has a poor appearance and is somewhat old, in return this princess is talented and very good at communication. It was these advantages of the princess that made even someone like Empress Dowager Cixi willing to follow her advice.
Princess Vinh Tho has a calm personality and is always cautious in her words and actions. Even when facing the powerful Empress Dowager Cixi, she never flattered herself or indulged in flattery, and was one of the few people who dared to frankly criticize Empress Dowager Cixi.
Princess Vinh Tho has always been devoted to Queen Mother Cixi. Living in the harem since she was a child, she has trained herself to observe carefully and resolve all public and private matters. She really hated eunuch Ly Lien Kiet but always got along well with everyone in the palace.
Princess Vinh Tho is a quiet person, but once she speaks, Queen Mother Tu Hi almost puts aside everything to listen. Perhaps, at that time, in addition to love, Empress Dowager Ci Hi was also 3 times afraid of the Grand Princess.
Legend has it that Cixi lived a luxurious lifestyle, loved to collect jewels, and used to wear makeup and dress lavishly. Witnessing this scene, the princess once frankly criticized, saying Tu Hy was already old, there was no need to spend so much money. Faced with this comment, Empress Dowager Cixi not only did not get angry but was also respectful.
After that frank criticism, every time Princess Vinh Tho came to see her, Queen Mother Tu Hi chose to wear relatively simple clothes and did not dare to wear too much makeup or jewelry. In addition, the Queen Mother only dared to secretly buy clothes and jewelry. She even had to tell the servants not to let the princess know for fear of being scolded. The palace staff all said that Princess Vinh Tho was more like Empress Dowager Cixi's mother.
Not only that, Princess Vinh Tho was also the one who reconciled the disagreement between Ci Hi and Emperor Quang Tu. At that time, she only said one sentence to the Queen Mother: "The Emperor is very pitiful. At the age of 5, he entered the palace and was not allowed to meet his biological mother. The Queen Mother should be his assistant."
Later, it was Princess Vinh Tho who saved Emperor Quang Tu's life when he was about to be deposed by Ci Hi after the Mau Tuat coup failed. She was even the one who repeatedly protected Concubine Tran, Quang Tu's beloved concubine, against the pressure of Queen Mother Ci Hi. It's just a pity that, at the time Queen Mother Tu Hi was preparing to flee and harm her, causing Concubine Tran to fall into the well and die, Princess Vinh Tho could not be present to save her and was extremely regretful.
When Guangxu and Cixi died, the Qing court fell into chaos. At that time, thanks to the help of Princess Vinh Tho, the funeral of these two characters was carried out smoothly. Besides, she also saved countless people and was fondly called "Great Princess".
In 1924, Vinh Tho passed away at the age of 70. However, every time the Great Princess is mentioned, posterity often passes down many anecdotes about her cunning and kindness. Perhaps that is also the reason why she made Empress Dowager Ci Hi so respectful.
