Trinh Cong Son was born on February 28, 1939. His hometown belongs to Minh Huong village, Vinh Tri commune, Huong Tra district, Thua Thien - Hue province.

In 1970, he joined the Self-Determination movement with Ngo Kha, Tran Viet Ngac, Le Khac Cam, Chu Son and Thai Ngoc San.

After 1975, Trinh Cong Son worked at the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, the Music magazine. In the early 1980s, he started composing again, initially some of his works were sent to Khanh Ly and were only released overseas.

In addition to being a musician and singer, Trinh Cong Son is also an amateur film actor. In 1971, he participated in the film and played the main role in the film Dat Mii by the late director Ha Thuc Can. After the film was completed in 1974, it was only shown to the public twice with a duration of 102 minutes, and then banned from being shown in South Vietnam. After 1975, this film was again selected as the main Vietnamese film in the 1996 Asian American Film Festival.
