After a period of investigation, collecting evidence as well as receiving statements from witnesses and victims, the shocking case in the entertainment industry involving Sean " Diddy" Combs was brought to trial.
On the morning of May 13 (Vietnam time), Diddy's most influential and serious criminal case in Hollywood in recent years opened its first trial. The trial has attracted the attention of the public around the world.
The trial was not videotaped, per federal court rules. So the inside story is shown in still images. Here are nine highlights from the trial:
1. Jury Details
Before opening statements, Mondayâs trial began with the final steps of jury selection. Last week, the court narrowed the jury pool to 43 people. The jury is made up of 12 people, eight men and four women. Judge Arun Subramanian dismissed Diddyâs PBCT charges, saying the jurors were selected based on neutrality.
2. Diddy's family shows support
The hip-hop mogul walked into the courtroom and greeted his family and friends with a big smile, patting his chest, giving a thumbs up and making a heart with both hands. There were six of the rapper's children, mother and sister in attendance. He also blew his mother a kiss.
3. The detailed testimon.y that forced Diddy's daughter to leave
Here, the jury heard detailed testimon.y about "freak offs", selling flowers, secretly filming, illegal substances, bab.y oil... The jury also considered evidence of violenc.e, including video of Diddy "physically impacting" Cassie Ventura and testimon.y from 2 witnesses.
Hearing about their father's crimes, the rapper's daughters stood up and left the courtroom. They returned briefly, then left again when the testimon.y detailed the violenc.e and TD. One of the 55-year-old rapper's sons even put his arms around her during some of the testimon.y.
4. Testimon.y of the man hired by Diddy to sleep with his girlfriend
Daniel Phillip, 41, said he was paid thousands of dollars between 2012 and 2014 to sleep with Cassie Ventura, while Diddy watched from a corner and masturbated.
Later, he heard Cassie screaming as if she had been physically assaulted by the rap boss in another room. Another time, the 8X singer was also beaten, and when she left the room, she threw herself into Daniel Phillip's arms, trembling with fear.
5. Release of video of Cassie being physically assaulted by Diddy at the hotel
This video was filmed in 2016 at a hotel in California, USA. Hotel security guard Israel Florez testified that Diddy physically assaulted Cassie. The singer had a black eye and kept saying, "I just want to get out of here." The rapper then tried to bribe the security guard with mone.y to keep quiet.
6. Diddy's defense attorney questions accuser's motives
"Diddy is a complicated man, but this is not a complicated case. This case involves love, jealous.y, infidelity and mone.y," said attorney Geragos.
The 55-year-old rapper's attorney added that some of the accusers, including Cassie, went to civil lawyers to seek mone.y, instead of going to law enforcement. "Everyone who testified had a motive," she stressed.
7. Both sides agree that Diddy committed a crime of violenc.e.
Prosecutors have accuse.d Diddy of being violent towards his former partners. The rapper's lawyer also acknowledged this accusatio.n. "He has a bad tempe.r, is violent when he drinks or uses drug.s and has committed a crime of violenc.e. However, that does not mea.n he is guilty of extortion or se.x trafficking," the lawyer said.
The lawyer clarified that the video of Diddy physically abusing Cassie is evidence of abus.e, but not evidence of trafficking. "He will be held accountable for what he did, but we will fight to free him for what he did not do," the lawyer affirmed.
8. Jury Watches Freak Offs Party Video
According to the prosecution, Diddy used threats, violenc.e, drug.s and lies to coerce women into attending these "freak parties" â also known as "King's Night Out" and "Hotel Night" â which he then filmed for use as blackmail. The defense, in contrast, said the "Freak Offs" were acts between consenting adults acting of their own free will.
9. Prosecutors highlight 2 main accusers
According to Assistant District Attorney Emily Johnson, the case primarily centers on two accusers: Cassie Ventura and a woman identified as âJane.â Cassie testified about her relationship with the âhip-hop mogulâ and the alleged âFreak Offsâ during the criminal trial.
The singer said that the parties involved illegal substances and prostitutes that lasted for days made her feel "disgusted" and "humiliated". The reason why Cassie had difficulty escaping the toxic relationship was because Diddy completely controlled her from her clothes, work, where she lived, the people she came into contact with, and even her phone and computer.
In the final part of her testimon.y, Cassie admitted to using various illegal substances and depressants to "detach from reality" and numb her emotions. "I can't imagine doing those things without something to suppress and cover up the disgust," the singer said. A third woman, an employee who was abused by Diddy, is also expected to testify.
