The American Civil Liberties Union ( ACLU) believes that the lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard affects them, so it has asked the Pirates of the Caribbean actor to pay more than $ 86,000.
According to Fox News, Johnny Depp is currently in a dispute with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and this organization is asking the actor to pay more than $86 thousand (nearly VND 2 billion) in legal costs. The ACLU is one of two charities to which Amber Heard has committed to charity from the $7 million ($162 billion) she received when she divorced Johnny Depp in 2016.
At the recent trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, the ACLU was also constantly mentioned when the witnesses and Johnny Depp's side presented evidence that Amber Heard had not fulfilled her promise to contribute $ 7 million to charity.
In the defamation lawsuit, a Virginia jury (USA) decided to award Johnny Depp $ 10.35 million (VND 240 billion) in damages, after alleging that Amber Heard lied to her ex-husband in an article mentioned the ACLU in the Washington Post published in 2018.
Terence Dougherty, ACLU's executive director and general counsel, appeared as a witness in court in April through a pre-recorded recording last December.
Dougherty said that the ACLU received $350,000 directly from Amber Heard, $100,000 from Johnny Depp, $500,000 through a donor advisory fund and $350,000 through a donor advisory fund. The total amount received by the ACLU from Amber Heard is $1.3 million (more than VND 30 billion).
He said Amber Heard had been nominated as an ambassador for the ACLU after pledging to provide a large donation, but he insisted the full amount had not yet been deposited at the time she was removed from the position.
"Miss Heard has spoken so clearly and in depth on issues of gender-based violence that the ACLU representative decided to choose her as an ambassador for the organization," he said.
Around the time of the lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, the ACLU was criticized for being complicit in the actress's allegations of deception. Johnny Depp's attorney also pointed out that the organization helped Heard cover up the false claims and said that the ACLU was "to blame in the case".
After being named in the lawsuit, the non-profit ACLU received a subpoena. A New York state judge (USA) ordered the ACLU to turn over documents and present witnesses, including CEO Terence Dougherty.
Currently, the ACLU has demanded more than $86 thousand in compensation from Johnny Depp. The organization said this is the amount they have to pay to appear in court. This includes the cost of reviewing more than 7,500 documents, presenting three witnesses, including an executive, according to the ACLU lawsuit.
Johnny Depp's side said that the ACLU's claim for compensation was unreasonable. The famous star only agreed to pay over a thousand USD (more than 23 million VND) for third-party data storage fees.
In addition to the dispute with the ACLU, Johnny Depp also faces a lawsuit related to allegations of assault on the set of City of Lies. Gregg "Rocky" Brooks - the location manager of the studio filed a complaint against Johnny Depp punching him twice in the ribs in a Los Angeles court in 2018.
The lawsuit alleges Johnny Depp is involved in crimes such as assault, mental distress, wrongful termination of contract and retaliation. Gregg "Rocky" Brooks said his lawsuit has been delayed for the past three years.
According to Insider, the famous female lawyer from the defamation lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard - Camille Vasquez will continue to represent the Pirates of the Caribbean actor in the trial scheduled to take place next month.
After the lawsuit, both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are facing difficulties. If her ex-husband has to repeatedly go to court and be asked for compensation, Amber Heard is struggling to find a way to return to showbiz. She is not even afraid to go on television to express her anger at the outcome of the trial, even though her sharing may cause her to be sued again.
Recently, when appearing on NBC's Today program, Amber Heard said that she was treated unfairly when she lost because she was not allowed to share many things at the trial in April and May 2022. She also believes that Johnny Depp's side led the media quite well, influencing the jury's decision.
The actress also blamed the smear campaigns on social media carried out by Johnny Depp's fans during the course of the lawsuit for greatly influencing the court's decision.
However, according to one member of the jury, Amber Heard failed to win them over because of the times she was exposed to lying. In particular, the actress's tears in court when she told about the times she was abused by Johnny Depp, attacked by the actor's fans, threatened to kill... were all unreal.
A member of the jury said he was upset when he read Heard's shares in the latest interview, especially her saying that the jury was unfair, influenced by social networks.
He shared, 3 out of 7 jurors do not use social networks, namely, do not have accounts on Facebook or Twitter. The jury's decision is based on the evidence, the testimony of the actor pair, the witnesses in court.
"She was crying all the time, her face was full of expression, staring at the jury. We were all very upset... Amber Heard kept on crying in one question but two seconds later she was cold again. like ice. Some of us use the phrase 'crocodile tears,'" the juror told ABC News on Good Morning America on June 16.
The juror said it was Amber Heard's failure to fulfill her promise to contribute $7 million to two charities after the divorce that changed the situation in the middle of the case.
The jury also found that: "The truth is that both of them abused each other. I don't think that makes either person right or wrong. However, Amber Heard has always raised the level of damage even if it is not enough. or is there any evidence that actually substantiates what she says."
