The PTTC family, a popular group on the TikTok platform with more than 400,000 followers, recently became the center of debate on social media after the incident of "reclaiming headphones" from a woman.
This action caused some netizens to criticiz.e this family for showing an impolite attitude, even somewhat rud.e in their behavior.
As soon as the clip about the "demanding headphones" incident was widely spread, previous content of the PTTC Family members was also "dug up" by social media users, making the debate longer and more complicated. Among them, one of the old videos of Nguyen Mai Chi, the youngest daughter of the PTTC Family, born in 2005, attracted special attention.
Specifically, at the end of April, Nguyen Mai Chi posted a video on her personal TikTok channel recounting how she helped a tourist call a ride-hailing service instead of letting them take a traditional motorbike taxi. This action was initially seen as a small help but caused a lot of heated debate on social media.
Mai Chi's video content has created many opposing opinions. Some people see her actions as enthusiasm, showing kindness to help others. However, many other opinions are critical, saying that Mai Chi has unintentionally conveyed inappropriate messages that can have a negative impact on society, especially on honest workers like traditional motorbike taxi drivers.
The video begins with Mai Chi's emotional statement: "I don't know when I started to lose faith in humanity." She recounts how she helped a tourist book a ride-hailing service through an app, while traditional motorbike taxi drivers were still soliciting customers with their services. According to Mai Chi, traditional motorbike taxi drivers offered a fare of VND50,000 for the ride, while the cost of traveling by car via the app was only VND34,000.
This prompted Mai Chi to help tourists choose a cheaper option, and share the story on social media. However, she soon faced backlash from motorbike taxi drivers, who scolded her for her actions, which "kicked the bucket" of honest workers.
To make amends, Mai Chi bought bread to give to the drivers in the story, hoping to make up for the loss and show her remorse. However, this method did not receive consensus from the online community. Many people thought that the drivers did not need such gifts and that her actions did not truly acknowledge her mistake.
Most of the comments on the social network Threads expressed dissatisfaction with Mai Chi's actions. Many people affirmed that the price offered by traditional motorbike taxi drivers was completely reasonable, not as expensive as the young woman described. In fact, the price of 34,000 VND when booking a car through the app may have included discount codes or promotions, which many people do not know about.
In addition, Mai Chi's use of the phrase "protecting tourists" to describe her actions has also caused controversy. Some opinions say that tourists do not need to be "protected" in that way and that Mai Chi's actions unintentionally take away the opportunity to experience the traditional motorbike taxi service, which is a cultural feature and the livelihood of many local workers.
In particular, the way the young woman talked about how she was "always the bad guy in someone's story" and "there are no pure snowflakes" was seen as implicitly blaming others instead of admitting her mistakes in a straightforward and responsible manner. This made many people feel that she had not truly realized the seriousness of her actions.
However, besides the harsh reactions, there are also some social media users who show sympathy. They think that Mai Chi's biggest mistake is probably just being too sympathetic and lacking careful thinking in her actions.
In fact, content creators with large followings on social media platforms like TikTok often hold significant influence over their user communities. This means that the messages they convey are not simply personal stories but can have a profound impact on the psychology and behavior of many people, thereby affecting society in general.
According to a survey by the Digital Marketing Institute (DMI) in 2024, up to 60% of social media users trust and rely on the advice and opinions of influencers in making decisions. The strong growth of influencer culture has led to concerns about the possibility of negative consequences.
A recent study by the University of Portsmouth (UK) has shown that social media influencers can not only spread false information but also contribute to creating distorted social norms, even leading followers into inaccurate or misleading behaviors.
Dr Georgia Buckle, a research fellow at the University of Portsmouth's School of Accounting, Economics and Finance, said: "Social media influencers now hold enormous power and are helping to shape many new cultural norms in their communities. Therefore, their responsibility to convey accurate and appropriate information is extremely important."
The case of PTTC Family in general and Nguyen Mai Chi in particular is a typical example showing the power and challenges of creating content on social networks today. A seemingly small action, such as helping tourists call a technology car instead of a traditional motorbike taxi, can create many complex reactions from the community, raising questions about how to show kindness, respect for traditional professions, and responsibility when holding influence on digital platforms.
The story is not just a controversial act of an individual, but also suggests an important lesson about the social responsibility of content creators in the digital ag.e. Before sharing any information or opinion on social media â where just one click can spread to millions of people â each individual needs to carefully consider the impact that content can bring. A seemingly small action can also affect the livelihood, emotions and values of many others.
The lesson is not just whether or not to âhelpâ in sensitive social situations, but how we understand and show respect for traditional labor groups in the ag.e of technology. In a society that is increasingly connected and vulnerable to conflicting information flows, understanding, empathy, and a sense of responsibility are paramount to maintaining a healthy, fair, and humane media environment.
