Thanh Hien admits that she has received great support from her family. Her two children are over 40 and 50 years old, both married, so she does not worry much. Currently, she only cares about her grandchildren.
A legacy of more than 700 films
Artist Thanh Hien was born in 1954, in Hai Duong. She has been active in the arts since the 2000s, and has now made over 700 films, playing gentle roles with harsh, oppressed fates. Many of them have become notable works such as: Lightning in the Rain, Sister Hang's Daughter... especially the film Mui Ngo Gai (2005).
Actress Thanh Hien confided that she used to be a housewife, staying at home to take care of her husband and children until 1990 when she was elected to the local residential group, working in information and propaganda for Binh Thanh district (HCMC).
Here, she had the opportunity to be taught by teachers such as director Le Van Tinh and Tran Minh Ngoc about script writing and staging techniques for several months. From there, she performed a number of plays for promotion before taking them to competitions in the districts. Coincidentally, a member of the troupe was an assistant director for the film Mui Ngo Gai. She was invited to play a small role in the film, acting in a few scenes with People's Artist Kim Xuan and Viet Anh.
"At first, when I was invited to act in the film, I was very scared. Scared because I couldn't imagine the role. When I heard that I would be acting with People's Artist Kim Xuan and Viet Anh, I felt secure in accepting the offer. During the first days on set, I was a bit confused, so I took the opportunity to learn, watch how people around me acted, and imitate them.
Since then, my love for the profession and my passion have motivated me to pursue this career until now. In 20 years, I have played more than 700 roles of mothers, grandmothers, maids... in TV series, movies, sitcoms, commercials, not to mention graduation films for students. I have never been picky about roles, not distinguishing between main or supporting roles," the female artist confided.
In response to more than 20 years of dedicated pursuit of art is the film considered a "blockbuster" at the April box office - "Lat mat 7: Mot uoc uoc" by director Ly Hai. In the film, the female artist plays the role of Mrs. Hai - a single mother who single-handedly raises 5 children to adulthood.
After her acciden.t and broken leg, the question of who will take care of her mother is raised, leading to a clima.x. It is known that this is the first time Ly Hai has chosen an older female lead and is also the first leading role on the big screen for actress Thanh Hien.
"I was happy but also stressed because I had never worked with Ly Hai before. When I was invited to audition for "Lat mat 7", I intended to refuse, thinking to myself that I was old, whoever gave me the role I would do it, but if I went to audition, if I failed, I would waste mone.y on transportation. The director of the new film crew told me to just call a taxi to audition, Ly Hai would take care of all the mone.y.
I tried out a scene where a mother had cancer but hid her illness from her chil.d. When the chil.d found out, she burst into tears and was gently comforted by her mother. At that time, I was just acting out of my motherly instincts. After three minutes, Ly Hai told me to stop, clapped his hands and accepted me for the role of Mrs. Hai. Only then did I realize how important the audition was, from which the director observed and 'tailored', giving advice to each person," the female artist said.
"I have never thought or wished for a leading role on screen. This time, I have the opportunity thanks to 'To Thuong'. To play the role of Mrs. Hai, I read the script many times, dozens of times, to the point of remembering my co-star's lines. I also studied and researched the diction and tone of voice to best suit the role," artist Thanh Hien added.
According to the female artist, the time filming "Flip Side 7" gave her many experiences "gathered" from more than 20 years of art.
Simple happiness
When asked about her salary for her first leading role in a movie, the artist refused to reveal the exact figure. "I won't reveal the salary. It may not be high compared to others, but this is the highest salary I have received to date. At this age, I feel lucky to be able to act in movies regularly," she said.
Sharing more about her income from art over the past two decades, the female artist also frankly confided that she participated in art because of her passion, and partly because of mone.y.
"Acting is my passion, my love, but it is also my main source of income to help me support my family. But I have never asked for a salary, anyone can pay me as much as they want. As for the students who graduate, I only support them and do not take mone.y. Currently, I still regularly go to film, for each acting scene, the crew pays me from 400,000 to 1 million VND. Sometimes when I think back, I feel happy because at this age I can still make mone.y," the female artist confided.
Take salary to pay for grandchildren's school fees
Recently, the film crew of "Tiger Leopard Fox" (directed by Cang Nguyen) had a premiere in Ho Chi Minh City. The film brings together the cast: Meritorious Artist Cong Ninh, Meritorious Artist My Duyen, actors Thanh Hien, Thanh Tan, Quynh Ly, Thien Nhan, Thuy Kieu, Ta Lam, Hai Vot...
Appearing at the press conference, artist Thanh Hien, despite being 73 years old, was very agile and healthy. She revealed: "After "Lat mat 7: Mot giau uoc" by director Ly Hai, my work has increased, and the love of the audience for me has also increased thousands of times.
More work, higher salary. I don't ask for it, but people pay me a little more. A little more makes me happy. For example, when I used to act in TV dramas, a segment cost 500,000 VND, now it's 700,000, 800,000 VND. Only the movie "Mother Sea" costs 1 million VND per segment. That's too high, it can't be more.
As for movies, I had a supporting role in "The Ancestors' House", and the price was the same as before when I acted in "Mat Biec" or "Hai Phuong". As soon as I told them the price, they agreed because I didn't ask for much.
I live with my husband and eldest son. When I first started filming, my family was worried, afraid that I was too old and would leave early and come home late. I kept going to Saigon, Phan Thiet, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Vung Tau... But later, seeing that I had more energy and was happier and healthier, my family was no longer worried, even reassured and learned from my mother about trying and working hard regardless of age. In general, my family supported me wholeheartedly.
I don't have any pressure about mone.y because my second son sends me mone.y every month. Every month he gives his father 3 million and me 5 million. That's enough for me, so I can do whatever I want with my salary and give it to whoever I want.
For example, I use my salary to pay for my grandson's school fees because his parents are divorced. He lives with me. He's going to college this year. His father works as a taxi driver and doesn't have much mone.y. If he doesn't have any mone.y, I'll help him.
Or if I hear that someone in the neighborhood is sick or in trouble, I go visit them. If I don't have much to give, I give them 500,000 VND. Or if I see a film crew member suffering, I send them a few hundred thousand VND each. In general, it's just a small amount, but I just do whatever I can do right now."
