Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour officially kicks off in March 2023 and has already traveled through many countries around the world. The concerts consistently broke attendance records, becoming the highest-grossing tour of all time.
Singer Taylor Swift had two concerts in Madrid, Spain on May 29 and 30, attended by tens of thousands of fans. This was the star's first performance at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the Spanish capital.
However, here, an unexpected incident happened to the singer after the show ended. Specifically, Taylor Swift was fined by the Madrid authorities for the concert taking place with excessive noise even though the venue was closed. For the record, Taylor Swift's concert produced a sound intensity of 80 decibels, far exceeding the allowed 53 decibels of a concert. A representative of the Madrid government said that procedures will be carried out to fine Taylor Swift and her team for this incident.
As the largest concert series in history, each night of The Eras Tour attracts tens of thousands of spectators. Therefore, it is inevitable that Taylor Swift's concerts will make an impact on the neighborhood.
During a press conference on May 30, Madrid city hall spokeswoman Inmaculada Sanz said authorities received a total of 25 complaints after Taylor Swift's performance on May 29. City Hall emphasized the need to re-evaluate sound indicators to determine if they exceeded allowable levels.
City Hall has also issued fines for music events determined to exceed previous noise limits. The promoter of Taylor Swift's concert in Madrid has not yet responded to the reports.
Taylor Swift's two concerts on May 29 and 30 are expected to boost income for the Spanish capital, while the city is paying off 1.2 billion euros in debt.
Earlier, experts from Caltech (California Institute of Technology) and UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) published a report entitled "Shake to the Beat: Exploring the Seismic Signals and Stadium Response of Concerts and Music Fans". In particular, research shows that Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour concerts with tens of thousands of fans participating, have caused earthquakes.
Specifically, at one of the six music nights taking place at SoFi Stadium (USA) in August 2023, experts set up motion sensors 5.5 miles (approximately 8.9 km) from the venue. The results showed that an earthquake with a magnitude of 0.851 occurred as 70,000 spectators danced together to the tune of Taylor Swift's hit "Shake It Off". The same situation happened when the singer performed the song "Love Story" by a considerable margin.
Previously, during a concert at Lumen Field in Seattle (USA) in July 2023, Taylor Swift and fans caused an earthquake equivalent to a magnitude 2.3 earthquake. The phrase "Swift quake" officially originated here. It is known that not only Taylor Swift but also the concerts of Beyoncé, Metallica or Morgan Wallen also create small earthquakes.
According to researchers, the small earthquake caused by Taylor Swift fans did not have a negative impact. The reason is that this is not an actual earthquake but just man-made shaking.
Taylor's earthquake reminded many of 2011's "Beast Quake," when a slew of fans erupted at the Seattle Seahawks' scoring performance. They screamed, stomped their feet, jumped, causing the ground to shake and creating an intensity of shaking equivalent to a magnitude 1 to 2 earthquake.
