The trial of Sean " Diddy " Combs entered a tense period when a clip of the male rapper physically impacting his girlfriend Cassie Ventura appeared. However, the star's lawyer did not believe this was real.
Diddy's trial entered its 16th day in a tense atmosphere, as the prosecution and defense lawyers struggled over the authenticity of the video evidence. In it, there is a video shown in court showing the 55-year-old rapper physically impacting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura at the InterContinental Hotel in 2016.
Diddy's defense lawyer was quick to question the credibility of these videos. They pointed out that in the recordings there were many "lost time" intervals and intermittent timelines. From there, lawyers suspect that these videos may have been tampered with or edited, leading to distorting the nature of the case.
To clarify these questions, forensic video expert Frank Piazza was summoned to testify in court. Piazza explained that the camera system usually only updates the timeline when clear motion is detected. Therefore, the "time-consuming" intervals that appear on the video are a normal technical phenomenon, which does not mean that the video has been edited or edited content.
Mr. Piazza also admitted that he made some minor technical edits to improve the audio and visual quality of the video. However, he insisted that he did not detect any unusual signs that the 2016 video recording Diddy and Cassie had been tampered with or edited in terms of content.
As for the origin of the videos, Piazza said he received them from prosecutors but could not confirm exactly where the recordings came from.
After forensic expert Piazza, the trial also heard testimony from other witnesses. According to information from The New York Times, on the 15th day of the federal trial, Eddy Garcia, identified as a former security guard at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles, testified that Diddy paid $100,000 to buy a video recording of the "hip-hop tycoon" who allegedly physically assaulted Casandra Ventura (Cassie) in a hotel corridor in 2016.
Garcia detailed that he repeatedly turned down offers to buy clips from Diddy and his assistant Kristina Khorram. After that, he was called to meet in person and reached an initial agreement on the sale of the clip for $50,000. However, the 55-year-old rapper paid double this amount, namely $100,000, and asked Garcia to sign a document confirming that it was the only version of the footage.
According to Garcia, he kept $30,000 from the money he received and used it to buy a used car. The former security officer was exempt from prosecution when testifying in this case. He also testified that Diddy made a FaceTime call with Cassie to confirm her desire for the incident to "disappear".
The lawyer of the "rap music tycoon" admitted that his client spent $100,000 to prevent the video from being leaked to the public. However, they completely rejected the intention to obstruct the authorities' investigation.
In addition to the video and testimony from Eddy Garcia, the court also showed several messages exchanged in 2015 between Diddy and his personal bodyguard, named D-Roc. These messages are said to reveal some kinks in the relationship between the characters involved, and more time is needed to clarify.
Meanwhile, Derek Ferguson, the former chief financial officer of Bad Boy Entertainment (Diddy's company), testified that he had never witnessed any criminal behavior by the cult star during his time with him.
The trial is expected to continue with cross-examination by Piazza from the defense attorney. In the coming days, other witnesses, including an ex-girlfriend of Diddy and a man who accused the rapper of threatening his life, are expected to appear in court. The next development of the trial promises to have many more complicated details and attract the attention of the public.
