The broadcaster confirmed that there was no misrepresentation as netizens argued.
JTBC released its statement, explaining the reasoning behind the decision to still broadcast "Snowdrop" amid the controversy. Accordingly, in a statement issued to the media on December 21, JTBC shared that there were misunderstandings surrounding the plot of the story and those misunderstandings will be cleared up in the following episodes.
"We would like to express our views on the controversy surrounding Snowdrop. After Snowdrop was broadcast, there continued to be unending controversies due to K-Drama's content different from reality, so we I would like to share my opinion.
First of all, the motive behind Snowdrop's story, setting, and key events is the President's political situation in the military regime. In that context, the work tells a hypothetical story in which those with vested interests conspire with the North Korean regime to maintain their power. Snowdrop is a work that shows the personal stories of people who sacrificed themselves and were taken advantage of by others while in power.
There are no spies leading the democratization movement in Snowdrop. The setting in which the male and female leads will join or lead the democratization movement does not appear in the first or second episode and will not appear anywhere in the script after that.
Most of the misunderstandings that have been pointed out by many people, such as distortion of history and disparagement of the democratization movement will be resolved, through future episodes of the series. This would include the intention of the productive group not to repeat an era when the liberties and well-being of the individual were oppressed by unjust power.
Unfortunately, we can't reveal too many details before the broadcast, but please keep an eye out for future developments!
In addition, JTBC plans to open a chat service on portal pages to listen to different opinions and valuable voices of viewers about our content. The core values that JTBC pursues are freedom of content creation and independence in production. Based on these values, JTBC will try its best to bring you good works," the station announced.
Korean netizens have also voiced their concerns, after it was reported that Snowdrop used a tortured musician as the inspiration for one of the characters. More than 310,000 netizens signed a petition to remove Snowdrop. Many of the project's sponsors also withdrew their funding for K-Drama following the backlash.
In addition, Mr. Yoon Young Chan - President Moon Jae In's press secretary, currently a member of the National Assembly, the 21st legislative member of the Democratic Party of Korea also expressed his thoughts through his social media account:
"We have to be careful about misrepresenting and dramatizing historical events in the drama Snowdrop. Criticism of Snowdrop is hot. The male lead is a North Korean spy disguised as a spy. young activist and supporting man, an agent of the Department of National Security, appears as a righteous man with strong principles, seemingly based on a story one has heard many times before, but it cleverly conveys the distorted image...
The influence of Korean culture is greater than ever. The world sees the content we create and consumes it with us. I worry about people around the world seeing the history of democracy in Korea by watching our stars act. I urge TV production teams and broadcasters to awaken their awareness of our history."
In contrast, Mr. Ki Kyung Ryang - Professor of History at The Catholic University of Korea has a different view: "Watching to volume 2. It is difficult to detect the intention of honoring the Ministry. National security or disparagement of the democratization movement that some claim..."
