A vermicelli shop on Hang Luoc Street (Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) was fined 4.5 million VND and temporarily suspended after foreign tourists reported poor sanitary conditions on social networks.
A vermicelli shop in Hanoi's Old Quarter has just been sanctioned by the authorities after images of sanitary conditions here went viral on social networks, causing a lot of controversy in the online community.
On March 5, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem Ward (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi) said that the ward's interdisciplinary inspection team on food safety had inspected a vermicelli business at 14 Hang Luoc Street. The inspection was carried out after a report appeared on social networks related to hygiene conditions at the restaurant.
In the process of working, the functional forces discovered that this establishment had many violations of regulations on ensuring food safety. According to the inspection team's records, the processing area as well as the place where food is sold are not carefully shielded, potentially posing a risk for insects to enter. This is a factor that can directly affect food hygiene as well as the health of diners.
In addition, the service staff at the restaurant when contacting and serving food to customers also did not fully implement the necessary protective measures. Specifically, employees do not wear gloves nor masks during the process of processing and serving food. These shortcomings are determined to be violations of regulations on food hygiene and safety for food service establishments.
The owner of the business establishment was identified as Ms. N.T.H. (born in 1963). When working with the inspection team, she admitted the violations stated in the minutes. After recording the incident, the functional forces made a record of administrative violations against this establishment according to regulations.
On the basis of the inspection results, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem ward has issued a decision to administratively sanction the aforementioned bun rieu restaurant with an amount of 4.5 million VND. At the same time, the authorities also asked the establishment to suspend business activities until the remediation of conditions related to food hygiene and safety is completed.
According to the commitment to the local government, the restaurant owner is only allowed to reopen when it has fully met the hygiene requirements, ensuring compliance with regulations for food business establishments. This is to avoid the recurrence of similar violations and ensure the safety of consumers.
Before the authorities entered the inspection, the incident attracted the attention of the online community. Specifically, on March 3, a Chinese tourist posted an article on the social networking platform Xiaohongshu, sharing his experience of eating at a vermicelli restaurant on Hang Luoc Street.
In the post, this tourist said that the environment at the restaurant is not hygienic. The poster attached some pictures recording the sales area with a damp floor and the appearance of garbage around. These images quickly attracted the attention of the online community.
Immediately after receiving the information spread on social networks, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem ward conducted verification and organized an inspection of the facility in accordance with regulations. The inspection aims to clarify the reflections of tourists, and at the same time ensure that food and beverage establishments in the area strictly comply with regulations on food hygiene and safety.
