Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park has recently discovered a new cave, 350 meters deep, containing a rare natural waterfall, opening up particularly fascinating potential for geological research and exploration.
On April 20th, the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board confirmed that its survey team had just recorded a particularly important geological discovery: a completely new cave located deep within the core forest area, containing a system of natural waterfalls with a rare structure, opening up many potentials for scientific research and tourism in the future.
According to initial information from the survey team, this cave was accessed during an exploration of the complex mountainous terrain of the national park. Preliminary measurements indicate that the cave is approximately 350 meters deep vertically, with a fairly complex stratigraphic structure and many sections that remain inaccessible due to rugged terrain.
The most distinctive feature of the cave is the presence of a powerful stream of water cascading from above, forming a natural waterfall entirely within the cave's interior. This phenomenon not only creates a magnificent landscape but is also considered rare in recorded cave systems in Vietnam and around the world. The continuous flow of water, combined with the ancient limestone structure, creates a unique humid ecosystem that may contain many undiscovered geological and biological values.
Geologists believe that the survey is still in its early stages, so it is not yet possible to draw accurate conclusions about the overall size of the cave or its internal hydrological system. Many areas are still outside the safe access zone, therefore more time and specialized equipment are needed for further exploration.
Representatives from the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board stated that in the near future, they will collaborate with domestic and international scientists to conduct more detailed research. The goal is to clarify the geological structure, the origin of the waterfall's formation, and to assess its potential for conservation and sustainable tourism development.
Phong Nha - Ke Bang is known as the "kingdom of caves," with a system of more than 425 large and small caves that have been discovered. Of these, about 50 caves have been opened for tourism, contributing to making the area a prominent destination on the world's natural tourism map.
One of the most prominent landmarks of the region is Son Doong Cave – the world's largest natural cave, famous for its underground river system, primeval forest, and vast space inside the limestone mountain. The existence of wonders like Son Doong further enhances the scientific and tourism value of the entire heritage site.
According to experts, although caves with underground streams are not uncommon in this area, the formation of a waterfall hundreds of meters high right inside the cave is an extremely special phenomenon. This demonstrates the diversity and complexity of the geological structure of Phong Nha - Ke Bang, and opens up many new hypotheses about the karst topography formation process in the area.
Researchers believe that this discovery not only adds a new cave to the already known system but also contributes to enriching the scientific data on underground hydrology and geology in central Vietnam.
Survey work is currently ongoing with the support of specialized equipment and a team of experienced experts. More detailed information about the structure, length, and value of the cave is expected to be released after the completion of further research in the near future.
Son Doong Cave unexpectedly becomes a focal point, appearing on American television and attracting international tourists.
