Singer Phong Dat is one of the people who launched hip-hop in the South, setting the stage for unprecedented artistic and cultural development in Vietnam today. But few people know, he has suffered many attacks in his career.
Singer Phong Dat, born on 4/11/1986, is a talented dancer of a dance company in Saigon. At the end of 2001, on the occasion of meeting Quach Tuan Du and To Huan Vu, 3 young men formed the group D&D under the management of manager Nguyen Hoang Anh Dung.
D&D became famous for his hit songs such as Wound of the Heart, Return to the Old Ben, Spend Tears for the Next Day, Farewell Song, Looking Back to the Old Place, Lonely Phone, Leaving the Moon Behind, Dreaming in a Dream.
However, it wasn't long before D&D suffered the same fate of many bands at the time, accepting to disband. After the disbandment of D&D in 2004, Phong Dat continues to compose many songs that strengthen his solo career.
In the beginning, Phong Dat listened to music from many online sources. Some of the rappers he has listened to are Eminem, 50 Cent, H.O.T, JTL,... At that time, there were no professional beat producers, so mainly if they liked any beat, ask the producer to redo it or if there was a beat available online, write rap for that beat. "In my youth I loved rapping and more or less brought it to young people. It's just a pity that in my time, rap wasn't as welcome as it is now," the singer said.
At the same time as Phong Dat in the mainstream music world, there were a number of singers experimenting with hip-hop music such as Hong Ngoc, Dinh Tien Dat, MTV group. Unfortunately, Feng Dat only knew them at a relative level, so he did not have the opportunity to cooperate. "My rapping style is really different from those mentioned above because rapping from start to finish is hard for listeners to listen to. So I chose a rap style that is a little easier to listen to, a simpler flow," Phong Dat said that when he first started exploring rap music, he only used single rhymes, long before he had double rhymes. Because no one instructed him, he researched and imitated himself to apply to his composition.
Also in the early 2000s was the time when many domestic and foreign underground rappers such as Khanh Small, Thai Viet G, Phong Le, LK, Young Uno,... is laying the first bricks for rap music. Regarding rumors of conflicts with artists in the world outside the North, Phong Dat shared: "I have no relationship with these artists due to geographical difficulties in the North and South and social networks have not developed as widely as now. In addition, there is no contradiction at all," Phong Dat shared.
If Vietnamese hip-hop in the North has played before and paved the way for a long time, Phong Dat is the pioneer to bring breakdance, popping, and rap music to be better known in the South and Western provinces.
The artistic path that Phong Dat chose was very supported by his family because his mother was a singer, so he wanted him to follow the profession. However, as one of the leaders in hip-hop music in Vietnam, he has inevitably received many unfavorable looks from the public.
After ups and downs, he shared: "At that time, rapping in my province also received many bad comments saying 'this singer does not sing all the time, bored to death'. I was a little frustrated at first, but then he thought the genre wasn't used to it so I added a bunch of performances. People in the province love breakdancing, so slowly the audience gets used to rap and slowly embraces it.
The feedback from the underground world for me is a lot, saying I'm not a rapper, half-season style... I really think I'm not underground, I'm just a rap/hip-hop singer and pursue it, and the underground has always had professional comments about me so that's right.
I felt normal because actually at that time it was mostly outside the North, in the South very little, and at that time I was researching and also writing and tinkering by myself, so I didn't have much knowledge to counter that."
Talking about gossip, at that time, a lot of information about Feng Dat turned around and broke his neck and died. The singer corrected that the accident never happened. "I honestly don't know why there was such a rumor, I just went north and worked with Big Toe on tour in the provinces, maybe while training with Big Toe there was a rumor."
Currently, Phong Dat is living a happy life with his wife Phu Nhu Nha Truc - also known as a member of the band Oxy. According to shared, Phong Dat met his wife for the first time at a music event. The male rapper is impressed by her small, youthful appearance, but she possesses a powerful voice and the ability to sing live extremely "top". On the other hand, he is also Nha Truc's favorite boy in the group thanks to his cold, "bad boy" appearance.
Dating for a while, the two decided to move in together and get married 3 years later. Unlike other couples who often have differences and conflicts, the two are almost very well matched, getting along well in life. Phong Dat has completely changed himself, spending most of his time with his wife and children.
The two have been together for 20 years, Phong Dat and Nha Truc's love is also a beautiful love affair in showbiz, admired and desired by many people.
