The film crew of "My Father's House, One Room" recently held a premiere screening in Ho Chi Minh City, attended by director and actor Truong Giang and the cast including Doan Minh Anh, Anh Tu, Le Khanh, Nhu Van, and others.
The event attracted media and audience attention as it was a film project in which Truong Giang took on the roles of director and actor.
The premiere was lively, with artists interacting and sharing about the filmmaking process as well as behind-the-scenes stories from the filming process.
However, shortly after the release date and premiere were announced, the film faced some controversy on social media. First, there was the issue of the release date. Some netizens argued that choosing Friday the 13th for the premiere was "spiritually offensive," as it's considered an unlucky day and is often seen as taboo. This opinion quickly spread, generating mixed reactions. However, many others argued that superstition shouldn't be overemphasized, as the date is merely a coincidence, and a film's success depends on its content quality and audience reception.
Besides the debate surrounding the release date, the film also attracted attention due to the theme song performed by Jack. The choice of Jack to sing the theme song immediately sparked various opinions. Some viewers believe this is a way for the film to attract more attention from the singer's fan base. Some even argue that Truong Giang is "exploiting" his junior colleague to generate buzz for his film project. However, others argue that inviting a singer with a large following to perform a theme song is normal in a promotional strategy, and this collaboration should be viewed from a professional perspective rather than speculating on motives.
Amidst controversies surrounding the film's quality and negative reviews, Truong Giang has responded. In his statements to the press, the artist frankly expressed his views on making Lunar New Year films. He stated that "Lunar New Year films don't necessarily have to be full of laughs." Truong Giang emphasized that each work has its own message and style, and simply labeling it as a holiday film doesn't mean it has to be purely comedic. For him, the important thing is the story and the emotions the film brings to the viewers.
Truong Giang's response shows that he is aware of the conflicting opinions surrounding the project. Instead of avoiding them, the director and actor chose to confront and explain his perspective. He affirmed that filmmaking is not simply about creating laughter, but also an opportunity to convey family values and everyday emotions. Therefore, he hopes that the audience will have a more open-minded view when enjoying the work.
Truong Giang said: "There are many layers of depth, and I think the audience needs to watch it 2-3 times to see the things I've put into the film." He listed some plot points that might only be noticed by the audience on the 3rd or 4th viewing.
The controversy surrounding My Dad's One Room shows the film's appeal even before its official release.
Truong Giang defends Jack, asking if singing the movie soundtrack while still under a performance ban violated regulations.
