A man and a woman appeared in court on February 10 for conspiring to pervert the course of justice, after it was alleged they assisted the ex-husband of murdered model Cai Tianfeng in his attempt to flee Hong Kong.
The defendants, 41-year-old cruise company employee Lam Shun and unemployed Pun Hau-yin, 29, pleaded not guilty before Kowloon City Court judge Philip Chan Chee-fai in December last year.
They are accused of helping a man named âAlexâ escape the city without going through Immigration Department border checkpoints between February 24 and 25, 2023.
"Alex" was later identified as Abby Choi's ex-husband, Alex Kwong Kong-chi.
On the first day of the trial, the prosecution presented statements of facts signed by both defendants.
These information said Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kau and brother Kwong Kong-kit were convicted of murder and destruction of Abby Choi's body in February 2023.
Alex Kwong was arrested at Tung Chung Pier on 25 February 2023, while trying to board a speedboat, 1 day after the model's body was discovered.
Lam was arrested on March 2, after police discovered a WeChat chat group featuring him, Pun, Alex Kwong and a Macau resident named "Ivy".
Pun was arrested on March 7 while passing through the Shenzhen Bay border checkpoint.
Ivy, a resident of Macau, China, was also named in the trial but was not listed as a defendant. She was charged with conspiring with the two defendants in an attempt to help Kwong escape.
A voice message sent by Ivy's account was heard in court and said: "A friend replied that the safest way is to book a sailing party to go somewhere in the middle [of the sea], then I will get some yacht company in Macau to pick you up."
