Pham Duc Thanh: Talented Dan Bau artist passed away due to serious illness, stars cried to see him off

The family announced that Dan Bau artist Pham Duc Thanh suddenly passed away at around 6am on August 22nd at his home, at the age of 69. Not long ago, he had a relapse of heart disease and was discharged from the hospital after a period of treatment.

The family is happy, believing that his condition has temporarily stabilized. In addition to heart disease, Pham Duc Thanh has many other illnesses, including kidney failure. Every week, he has to go to the hospital for dialysis three times.

His family will bring his coffin back to his hometown Ninh Binh to hold a funeral, then cremate him.

The passing of artist Duc Thanh has left many colleagues and audiences in mourning. On her personal page, artist Le My revealed that she had just had a conversation with Meritorious Artist Thanh Thanh Hien about artist Pham Duc Thanh, and unexpectedly heard the news of his passing shortly after. Meritorious Artist Thanh Thanh Hien also said that she was extremely shocked and saddened upon hearing the news.

Meanwhile, singer Ho Quang Tam wrote: "He is a famous artist not only with domestic audiences but also with millions of audiences who are overseas Vietnamese. A monochord artist, just listening to his music, many dear images of the homeland and family appear. His music also gives wings to many voices, many songs to fly further.

He collaborated and played the monochord for many singers over the past decades, but he still paid close attention to the songs you released and praised your voice. It was so sudden to hear the news of your passing, when your career and playing were still graceful, skillful and full of vitality."

Artist Pham Duc Thanh was born in 1956 in Gia Vien, Ninh Binh, and showed his talent from a young age. At the age of 4, he knew how to play the Cheo drum, at the age of 5 he learned to play the mandolin, and at the age of 6 he became familiar with the two-stringed fiddle and monochord.

In 1974, he worked at the Vietnam Cheo Theater. Then, he went to Ho Chi Minh City to study more about traditional music of the Central and Southern regions. In October 1983, he graduated as valedictorian of the university majoring in Vietnamese Traditional Music Research. In 1985, he won first prize in the national Dan Bau competition.

Pham Duc Thanh settled in Canada for many years, then returned to live and work in the country.

During his years living abroad, he tried to bring the sound of the monochord to international friends.

The artist was once featured on Ici ARTV - Canada's famous French-language arts television channel - and recognized as someone who has made great contributions to promoting traditional music.

Pham Duc Thanh has also participated in many international music festivals, playing the instrument with many famous artists from many countries. He has performed with the famous Chinese pipa artist - Liu Fang, and performed with Professor Tran Van Khe at many international folk music festivals. Professor - Doctor Tran Van Khe once commented: "Pham Duc Thanh not only plays the monochord, but has turned the one-stringed instrument into the voice of the Vietnamese soul".

Talking about the monochord, artist Pham Duc Thanh once confided: "I love Vietnamese folk music, I love the monochord, a special instrument that carries the distinct cultural identity of the Vietnamese people. I call the monochord the "princess" of Vietnamese folk instruments. The tones of the monochord evoke emotions in listeners about distant lands, the melodious sound of the instrument reminds us of the homeland of those who live far away, reminds us of our parents' kindness and dedication, reminisces about our childhood, brings us closer to old love and affection".

In March 2018, artist Pham Duc Thanh organized a music night called Doc Huyen Cam at the Hanoi Opera House. This was also his first big live show in Vietnam.

Regarding his private life, male artist Pham Duc Thanh is married to singer Nguyen Phuong Linh.

When talking about his wife, artist Pham Duc Thanh always shows his respect. "I love my wife very much. Thanks to her always being by my side taking care of every little thing, I always feel secure in life. Without me saying anything, my wife already understands what I want. That is the happiest thing in life."

Singer Phuong Linh is 20 years younger than artist Pham Duc Thanh. Not only is she her husband's soul mate on stage, Phuong Linh has also accompanied artist Pham Duc Thanh throughout his career.

The female singer said that when they first met, she never thought she would fall in love with Pham Duc Thanh. But when she realized her fate with the Dan Bau artist, Phuong Linh accepted to "love him all the way", supporting her husband in everything.
