Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen, a name that is no longer strange to those who love the art of Cai Luong. Not only possessing a sweet, soulful voice, Ngoc Huyen is also known for her illustrious career, from Cai Luong stage to the music field.
Ngoc Huyen, whose real name is Vu Ha Ngoc Huyen, was born in 1970 in Saigon to a family from the North who migrated to the South in 1954. Her father was an architect originally from Hanoi, and her mother was originally from Ha Tay. Although no one in her family was in the arts, Ngoc Huyen soon showed a passion for singing and acting. With the support and inspiration of her mother, she began her artistic career at the ag.e of 14.
1985 marked an important turning point in Ngoc Huyen's career when she sang on Thanh Nga stage with her first play "Thung Dem Tan To". From 1985 to 1989, she learned to sing Chinese opera through classic plays.
After joining the Huynh Long classical opera troupe, Ngoc Huyen received formal training in Ho Quang singing, and continued to be mentored and trained by other famous artists. Thanks to that, she quickly affirmed her talent and successfully performed many types of opera, from classical opera, Ho Quang to modern social operas.
With her talent and constant efforts, Ngoc Huyen quickly became one of the most famous cai luong artists of the 90s. In 1992, she made an important move when she entered the music and film industry. This versatility helped Ngoc Huyen's name spread more widely, especially through tape and disc programs. She was affectionately called "Queen of Video Treasures" by the audience and became the youngest artist in the South to be awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State in 2001.
In December 2002, Ngoc Huyen organized the live show "Forever Dream" at Hoa Binh Theater, Ho Chi Minh City, attracting more than 5,000 audiences in 3 nights. This live show marked an important milestone in her career, and at the same time affirmed the position of Cai Luong in the hearts of audiences, especially the youth.
Professor Tran Van Khe had valuable comments about this live show: "Through this program, Cai Luong has broken out of old stereotypes to reach young people with the breath and rhythm of the times but still retains the rustic, emotional, and lyrical qualities of traditional theater."
After a period of performing in the US as a tourist and staying at the famous singer Thanh Tuyen's house, in 2002, Ngoc Huyen married Dong Nguyen, the son of famous singer Thanh Tuyen, an officer in the US Air Force.
After that, she decided to settle in the US and switched to the field of modern music, traditional music, and released DVDs of excerpts from the Ho Quang song "The Four Beauties", continuing to receive the love of overseas audiences. In August 2010, she organized the live show "Giũ Mãi Tình Yêu" to celebrate 25 years of singing in Dallas with two performances on the same day, recorded and released on DVD by Asia Center.
Ngoc Huyen's married life is known to be extremely fulfilling. Her husband is not only a loving and understanding partner, but also someone who always supports and helps her wholeheartedly in her career. Coming from an artistic family, Ngoc Huyen's husband understands the difficulties and hardships of the profession, and is always ready to manage the housework and take care of the children so that she can pursue her passion with peace of mind.
However, throughout her career, Ngoc Huyen has also been involved in political controversies, especially during her collaboration with the Asia Center. The programs she participated in were criticize.d by some domestic newspapers, and at one point she was even considered to have her title of Meritorious Artist revoked. However, Ngoc Huyen always maintained her point of view, believing that artists simply put themselves in the role of a character and convey the content of the work, with no intention of participating in politics.
Although living far from her homeland, Ngoc Huyen always looks to Vietnam. She preserves Vietnamese culture for her children, teaches them to speak Vietnamese and often converses in her mother tongue. Her house in the US has a large garden with many types of Vietnamese fruit trees, as a way to ease her homesickness. She also actively participates in charity activities, donating to support compatriots in the country, especially in difficult times such as the pandemic.
Currently, at the ag.e of over 50, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huyen is enjoying a fulfilling life with her family. Besides her artistic activities, she also sells cosmetics and has a stable income. She has a good relationship with her husband's family, especially her mother-in-law, famous singer Thanh Tuyen. Although they live far away, the family bond is always close and intimate.
