Ut Tra Wen (SN 1919) is known as a famous reform artist of the Southwest and the South. In his performance as well as in everyday life, he was considered gentle, gentle and kind.
Artist Ut Tra On was born Nguyen Thanh Ut because he was the youngest son in his family. He was born in Dong Phu hamlet (Dong Hau village, Tra On district) which was then in Can Tho province, now Tra On district (Vinh Long province). It was also from this land that he began to instill a love of music, especially a love for reform.
Since childhood, with his innate talent, passion and hard work - Nguyen Thanh Ut has become a beloved artist from the South to the North. He is revered as the "King of Echoes" with the stage name - Ut Tra On.
At 16, Thanh Ut asked his family to start singing lessons in his hometown. His hometown, along the banks of the Hau River, is also a region famous for the art of reform liang. In 1937, Thanh Ut was introduced to Saigon Radio by an acquaintance and has since officially adopted the stage name Ut Tra On.
His inspiring, warm, sincere, Southwestern voice was introduced to the airwaves â quickly gaining popularity among listeners. The first song he sang on the radio was "The Awakening."
With a passion for art and excellent singing ability, Ut Tra On regularly contributes vocals to the Radio, and also records for record labels. In particular, he has contributed to improving the reputation of Asia Records with the ancient song "Sun Tan's Fake Madness" consisting of 20 verses. This is the composition of a famous Yanma (Buddhist monk) at this time.
In 1942, he in turn performed for Cai Luong such as: Clown Lap, Thanh Long, Evolution, Mong Van, Sao Mai, Thanh Minh,... In 1954, he founded the Kim Thanh Singing Troupe. At that time, this singing group had many big Southern artists, such as Thanh Tao, Kim Chuong, Thuy Nga... co-director.
In 1955, in Saigon, during an audience poll of the press, artist Ut Tra On was awarded the title of "The First Male Singer" by the audience. After that, Ut Tra On collaborated with the Capital delegation (the owner is Mr. Phan Van Van, who is also the owner of Hoang Son Records).
In 1962, Ut Tra Wen and his close friend, artist Hoang Giang, founded Thong Nhat Festival, collaborating with troupes such as: Da Ly Huong, Thai Duong, Quoc Thanh, Huong Da Thao, Phuong Binh, Qinghai, Xinhualan, Kim Chung,... From here, too, he and his friend created a strange wave of Southern wealth.
With her warm and sweet voice, artist Ut Tra Wen is famous for many ancient songs. He was adored by audiences for his reformed plays. Many ancient songs to this day still linger more or less memories and feelings in the hearts of admirers. These can be mentioned as: The sound of heart; 3 p.m.; Shakyamuni; Brotherhood (Composition: Yuanzhou People's Party); Car mistress...
Talking about him, the artist and composer Vien Chau emotionally said: "In 1947, I heard that there was a singer named Ut, originally from Tra Wen, so Asia Ice Company gave the stage name Ut Tra Wen. The first disc of Sun Tan's fake madness sold like fresh shrimp, the second disc "Thai Master Van Trong" also created a fever among fans of the six provinces. Since then, in theatrical circles, people have called him the First Singer of the South, the pride of the Reform Stage.
By the time the Brotherhood Disc was released, the public gave him the nickname "King of Echoes". I remember the first day I met Ut. As an artist admired by the audience, he lives very modestly. Kim Thanh - Ut Tra Wen that day was famous for 3 performances that went down in theatrical history: "The King of Flowers", "The Life of Miss Nga" and "Behind the Velvet Curtain". All 3 plays Ut played double starring. He went from being a peasant artist to portraying the peasant like himself, everyday life with muddy feet, stepping onto the stage sanctuary.
At the age of 80, People's Artist Ut Tra Wen still performs in classical music programs organized by his daughter, artist Bich Phuong. Whenever he met the composer Yuanzhou, he often boasted: " Brother Seven, when I was young, I acted so much, but at this age I only lived on your echoes of Brotherhood selling mats."
People's Representative Ut Tra On died on August 13, 2001 at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City), aged 83 and resting at the Artist Pagoda in Go Vap district.
At the funeral of the late artist, his daughter Bich Phuong choked up and said: " That day I fell when I went to the toilet, no one in the family knew because I wanted to be quiet lately... She cried tears when the doctor told her to take her father to the hospital. Six years ago, a stroke made her cry. I have a lot to worry about but I can't say, especially when I turn on the TV with a reform program."
Although he is gone, the song - Brotherhood of Selling Mats is still alive and has become a "specialty" of the river region of Junction Seven in Hau Giang province. Somewhere in the heavily alluvial land still resonates the song as if containing the love of the artist: "The river is deep on the shore, the brotherhood sells mats forever without fading"...
In 1997, he was awarded the title of People's Artist (4th batch) and the Order for his theatrical career for his great contribution to the arts of Ho Chi Minh City. When he was awarded the title of People's Party, Nguyen Minh Triet, then Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City's Party Committee, went to the hospital to visit the leading elderly artist in the South.
