In the mid-80s of the last century, there was a cai luong play that stormed the southern theaters. It is the reformed play Lady Caesar. What is interesting is that the actress who plays the main role of the play is a girl who grew up in the North - a land that has no strength in reforming. That is People's Artist Thanh Vy.
Cai Luong peach from the North
The cradle of Cai Luong is the South, the famous names of the Cai Luong stage once stayed in the hearts of the audience, mostly Southern artists. The North is more popular with the art of Cheo and Tuong. However, in the 1980s, a singer from the North brought to the cai luong stage a role for her that was for life, and for the stage was an unforgettable mark. That is Thanh Vy, with the role of Lady Xe Da in the cai luong play Nang Xe Da (original script by Luu Quang Thuan and Luu Quang Vu, adapted from reformist: composer The Ha Van, this is also the story from Indian epic Ramayana).
The audience later probably remembers People's Artist Thanh Vy a lot with the roles of a sharp grandmother or mother-in-law in many TV series. The time shining brightly on the stage of Tran Huu Trang Theater was like the most beautiful part of his youth life that the artist still treasures and keeps forever in his memory.
Thanh Vy that day had a beauty that was both noble, kind and melancholy in the image of Xe Da, with an ecstatic and emotional incarnation. Along with artist Phuong Quang (as King Priem), Xe Da Thanh Vy shed tears and moved the audience's hearts. Nearly 1,800 performances, some nights were muted, the female artist had to ask her colleague to sing the first part, and she had to keep her breath to be able to handle difficult psychological scenes for the next part.
"How did a northern artist fall in love with cai luong and become a cai luong with a southern accent?" - That was my first question when talking with People's Artist Thanh Vy. The answer to this question is a long life with many twists and turns of the artist. Thanh Vy has a father, a zither artist Tran Van, a mother who is a comedian Van Qui, and joined the art troupe of Mr. Long, who often sang at the Golden Bell Theater (Hanoi) in the 1950s-1960s. Thanh Vy has heard singing since childhood, but she especially likes to listen to cassette tapes of Southern reformed plays, admires the names Ut Tra On, Ngoc Giau, Le Thuy...
"Those cassettes followed soldiers marching from the South to the North, into the war zone, and then to the evacuation areas. At that time, it was difficult to get a cassette tape to listen to, but listening to it was mesmerizing. When I entered the School of National Opera, I chose to study at the Faculty of Cai Luong, Mr. Ba Huynh, Ms. Nam Thanh Huong... all spoke with a Southern accent, I was passionate about studying, practicing speaking, practicing singing. After graduating, he returned to the Southern reform group," said People's Artist Thanh Vy.
At that time, the Southern Cai Luong troupe was the only Southern Cai Luong troupe operating in the North, but rarely sang Tuong Truyen (a play with the content of the Chinese historical dictionary) as in the South. In 1964, Thanh Vy and 11 other artists joined the literary troupe in Truong Son. The trip was led by artist Nguyen Ngoc Bach (the late Meritorious Artist Nguyen Ngoc Bach) and toured serving the army along the legendary route. The Cai luong plays Dat, Water, Spring... were sung in the middle of the forest, on temporary stages that People's Artist Thanh Vy said she still remembers forever.
On April 30, 1975, when the Voice of Vietnam radio broadcast the news that the South was completely liberated, Thanh Vy and her siblings jumped for joy. So let's go to Saigon! That was the wish of the composer Hung Tan - her husband - who had gathered to the North since 1954. It was also her joy when she learned that soon, the whole family would get on the train together to return home. When she returns to the South, she will be able to see with her own eyes and meet the Southern reformed artists that she deeply admires and wishes to meet once.
A shining time, a longing life
On the first night of "debuting" Southern reformed artists, the Southern Cai Luong troupe chose the play Kieu Nguyet Nga, Thanh Vy as the main actor with meritorious artists Thanh Dau, Kim Lien, Thanh Tung... The play at the National Theater Thanh, under the audience seats are famous names: Ut Tra On, Le Thuy... "I'm very nervous, knowing that I can sing with a Southern accent is not as good, but once I've gone on stage, I'll practice. When the artists Ut Tra On, Le Thuy ... came on stage to congratulate, I knew that I had also performed successfully," recalled People's Artist Thanh Vy.
That night, she went back to bed and thought about the pros and cons of the role. It was a pleasure to "touch the lane" in the South. But the biggest challenge is not the pressure to perform in front of famous artists, but when looking down on the stage, there are very few spectators watching. Even the plays that have been popular for many years in the North: Gunshots in early spring, Hon Dat, Beside the Nhat Le stream... could not pull Southern audiences to theaters.
People's Artist Thanh Vy said, at that time, when the new group entered, the audience did not like northern artists, and the performances were sparse. And when asked who wants to go to the North and who wants to stay, there are only two people left in the group who choose to stay in Saigon: Thanh Vy and artist Ha Quang Van. The Southern reformed troupe then changed its name to Tran Huu Trang Theater and began to have the participation of Southern artists: Minh Duc, Ngoc Mai, Dang Vinh Quang... then Ngoc Giau, Bach Snow, Le Thuy...
In 1982, Thanh Vy received the love of a large audience through the performance of the island of Venus. In 1983, when editing the play Nang Xe Da, Meritorious Artist - director Doan Ba chose Thanh Vy, among the brightest faces Ngoc Giau, Bach Tuyet... The voice of female artist Thanh Vy at that time was not equal. She has a pure Southern voice, but her appearance, temperament, especially the eyes of "She Da" have brought her a role of a lifetime.
At that time, in all theaters Quoc Thanh, Capital, Hao Hue, Cay Go... there were performances of Nang Xe Da, sometimes twice a day.
Thanks to this performance, artist Thanh Vy had a lot of audience love at that time. She said that at this time, her family was still poor, so she went to the show by bicycle. Many young spectators volunteered to come to her house to take her away.
After reforming downhill, Thanh Vy again participated in plays at stage 5B, then she also participated in films with many popular roles such as Palace Candle, Returning, Falling in Love, Love Cycle. love, Heaven is with us, Perch I love you, Even if the wind blows...
In particular, Meritorious Artist Thanh Vy was "rated" by the audience in the list of "One of the most difficult mothers-in-law on TV series".
Currently, because of her advanced age, People's Artist Thanh Vy restricts filming, she stays at home
playing with two grandsons and confiding in his son. Occasionally, female artists attend meetings with colleagues.
