People's Artist Nguyen Khac Loi: Director of the film "Nguyen Ai Quoc in Hong Kong" dies at the age of 92

At 7:30 a.m. on August 2, People's Artist Nguyen Khac Loi passed away, enjoying a life span of 92 years. The information was shared by his student - director Artist Dang Thai Huyen, Deputy Director of Cinema of the People's Army.

According to Dang Thai Huyen, People's Artist Nguyen Khac Loi was sick and had been lying in one place for quite a long time. In the past, every time she visited her teacher, she often held a paper and pen ready to write down what she wanted to tell and show off to her. But sometimes he just holds his hand, chatting about something, regardless of whether he hears it or not.

"Before going on a business trip, I only had time to visit him, forcing him to eat the whole bowl of porridge. I wrote down a piece of paper: "I went on a business trip, I came back to the teacher". He nodded and laughed. Then I was busy making movies, and before I had time to enter, he couldn't wait. Today, a sun in my heart has disappeared, a spiritual father who I always said was without him, without me as today has left me," Dang Thai Huyen said.

Dang Thai Huyen also added that she has a habit, every time she enters a new film project, she will greet People's Artist Nguyen Khac Loi to ask for good luck. In her eyes, People's Artist Nguyen Khac Loi is a person with a gentle smile and a warm face. He is a person who has made great contributions to teaching and bringing her into the filmmaking profession.

According to her, director Nguyen Khac Loi is "a good director in the profession, a teacher of many directors", "one of the directors of the golden generation of Vietnamese cinema".

He left, leaving many lessons about professional ethics and lifestyle for the next generation of directors. On the set, he never spoke out loud to anyone in the crew. Whenever he has something to say, he also communicates gently and in a constructive spirit.

"It is a person with a personality, not willing to speak harshly to anyone, always afraid of others being hurt," said Dang Thai Huyen.

Once, because of Dang Thai Huyen's negligence, the filming progress of Nguyen Ai Quoc in Hong Kong was affected. The director called her to scold her privately. However, for fear of being hurt, he then said "I just want to remind you to learn from experience, don't be angry or sad".

Meanwhile, director Dao Thanh Hung remembers the teacher as a gentle and witty person. He not only teaches students many vocational lessons but also advises them what is right in life.

Both directors Thai Huyen and Thanh Hung are his students in the 19th directing class, Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema. In addition, People's Artist Khac Loi has taught many famous names such as directors Pham Nhue Giang, Nguyen Thanh Van, Luu Trong Ninh, Do Thanh Hai.

Director Trinh Le Phong also shared about the teacher: "People's Artist Nguyen Khac Loi has left the temporary realm. Farewell to my dear Teacher! I knew this day would come, but I was sad. More than a dozen days ago, when I visited him, he still asked: "Have you filmed anything lately?"

Actor/Director Trong Trinh expressed: "Dear uncle. My deepest condolences to the family. Respectfully agree".

Director Linh Vu remembers the days in the university lecture hall, artist Khac Loi was very close to his students. When entering the ancient age of Lai Xi, students called him "uncle", proclaimed him "son". Every time he visited, he still read each person's name, remembering their own stories clearly. The last time he saw the artist was at the end of July, when he was still chatting happily with his students.

Artist Nguyen Khac Loi was born in 1932 in Phu Tho, is the director of many documentary films recreating the resistance war against the French. In his career, he did not make too many films, but his works all left an impression on the audience. The most prominent is the retired General, adapted from a short story by writer Nguyen Huy Thiep.

The film is about Mr. Thuan - a general who served the revolution all his life, with many illustrious feats. However, when he returned to everyday life, he was lost in his family and society was transforming according to the market economy. Artist Manh Linh plays Mr. Thuan and artist Hoang Cuc plays Thuy - his sharp daughter-in-law. The work won the Silver Lotus Award (no gold award) at the 1990 Vietnam Film Festival.

One of his last major films was Nguyen Ai Quoc in Hong Kong, co-produced by the Vietnam Writers Association Film Studio and China's Zhujiang Film Studio in 2002. The film was filmed in China for three months, starring actor Tran Luc. The work won a special prize at the 2003 Kite Festival, and the 2004 Vietnam Film Festival. Actor Tran Luc won the 2004 Golden Plum Award for the best actor in a film and television.

In addition to his film career, he also made a series of other documentaries, especially the film "The Whirlwind" with footage recreating the resistance war against France, adapted from the script of writer Chu Lai.

Director Nguyen Khac Loi once shared that he likes to make films adapted from writers' compositions. With a good work, the story will be chained and linked with images. As a result, his film is easy to elevate, but on the contrary, if the film is finished, it will also make the original work depreciate. Therefore, he always puts a lot of enthusiasm, passion and responsibility into the films he makes.

People's Artist Nguyen Khac Loi once affirmed that being a director in addition to talent requires hardship, hardship and passion to be successful.
