A woman living in Indiana (USA) has died unexpectedly due to "water poisoning" - this is considered the cause of death ever. This information caused many people extreme confusion.
As any of us know, water is an essential drink; Water plays a role in the "survival" of the human body, as well as animals.
However, in fact, it can be seen that very few people understand how many liters of water the body needs per day. As well as how to drink water is the right way - so as not to harm health. Of course, all excesses are not good, including drinking too much water.
Not long ago, ABC News reported on Aug. 4 about a rare case. Specifically, Ashley Summers (35 years old), living in Indiana, USA, died suddenly of water poisoning.
Devon Miller, the victim's brother, told reporters that during an outing with her family, Summers felt severely dehydrated and drank nearly two liters of water in 20 minutes. " At the time, she said she had a headache so she drank a lot of water," Miller was quoted as saying by ABC News.
Shortly thereafter, Ms. Summers began feeling dizzy and having headaches, so her family took her home. The mother-of-two was later found fainting in the garage. Summers was rushed to Health Arnett Hospital in Indiana by her family but succumbed to water poisoning.
"We were all shocked. When the people at the hospital said it was water poisoning, I didn't believe it was real," Miller added.
Not only Miller's family, many people after hearing the news were confused. There are many questions surrounding this existence.
It is known that water poisoning is a rare but still possible and extremely dangerous condition. When a person drinks too much water and drinks too fast, the body goes into a state of electrolyte imbalance.
Many studies also say symptoms of excess water can include "changes in mental status, disorientation, confusion, nausea and vomiting." Water poisoning, if not detected early, can lead to seizures or coma.
"Water poisoning is quite rare. We should not drink too much water in a short time. The kidneys can only filter about 1 liter of water per hour," Indiana's WLFI quoted Dr. Alok Harwani at Health Nett Hospital as saying.
Dr. Harwani also gives advice on eating/drinking. He suggests that we should eat more food or drink water that can replenish electrolytes such as fruit or electrolyte rehydration, instead of just drinking plain water. This helps balance water and sodium in the blood.
Although Miss Summer passed away suddenly, she left behind a tremendous value in her life. Summer's family members decided to sign the organ donation papers â "They have taken her heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and bone tissue. There were 5 people who got a second chance at life because of Summers' generous donation," Miller said.
Citing Tuoi Tre newspaper source, related to the above incident, Dr. Nguyen Trong Thuy (Starsmec Sports Medicine Center) analyzed: under normal conditions, the amount of sodium (Na) in the blood is 135-145 mmol/L, which plays the role of balancing water and maintaining osmotic pressure for extracellular fluid.
This woman's condition is called hyponatremia, a condition when sodium levels in the blood are too low.
Dr. Thuy also added that water poisoning is quite rare. We should not drink too much water in a short time. The kidneys can only filter about 1 liter of water per hour. According to Dr. Thuy, under normal conditions, the body needs an average of 2-2.5 liters of water a day.
During physical activity, depending on the degree, the body's sweat secretion increases several times. In the two hours before exercise, it is recommended to drink 400-600ml of water and every 15-20 minutes drink about 150-200ml of water. Filtered water is the best drink, so drink slowly, in small sips.
