Death has always been an inescapable necessity. The fantasies of becoming immortal or resurrected may seem far-fetched, but not without real scientists pursuing them.
In 1967, such an ambitious experiment was carried out for the first time. That is the Cryogenic experiment. Accordingly, the human body will be preserved at low temperatures immediately after death to "freeze" the cells. The frozen person will stay there temporarily and wait until the time when science has developed enough to "awaken" them back to life and cure whatever caused them to die before.
Even now, the results and feasibility of the Cryogenic experiment are hotly debated. But more than 50 years ago, someone bravely volunteered to freeze his body for the first time - an American professor named James Hiram Bedford.
Mr. Bedford is a professor of psychology at the University of California and a successful man in life. He died on January 12, 1967 of kidney cancer. Before his death, Bedford left a will to freeze his body for "revival". He also left $ 100,000 (at the current exchange rate of nearly 1 million USD - about 20 billion VND) to the Life Extension Association (LES) to preserve him instead of letting his wife and children inherit.
The professor's body immediately after his death was injected anticoagulant chemicals into the blood by experts of the LES Association and pumped oxygen into the circulatory system to minimize damage to the brain. His body was then placed inside a container filled with dry ice (about -79C), before being exposed to liquid nitrogen at -196C.
Soon after, unable to bear the high costs of preservation, his son Bedford took his father's body home and periodically changed the liquid nitrogen himself. In 1982, Mike Darwin - a representative of the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Arizona successfully persuaded the family to bring Bedford to his facility and offer lower maintenance costs. His frozen body has been there to this day.
In 1991. 24 years after "freezing", the nitrogen tank containing the body of James Hiram Bedford was opened for the first time for an examination and evaluation. His condition was revealed, causing many people to shudder
After the vase's metal coating was cut, Alcor technicians found James in a light blue sleeping bag, tied to a rack with nylon cord. Experts say his face has remained "sealed" since his death. The cold "mummification" seems to really work.
However, upon closer examination, his body was also damaged in some places. Specifically, Bedford's upper body and neck as well as his arms changed color and became red, like inflammation caused by an infection. The nose part collapsed from being compressed by a dry ice sheet during the initial freezing, and the skin on the chest cracked. The professor's nose and mouth smelled of blood. His eyes were half open and his corneas were the chalky white of ice. If Bedford is resurrected, his appearance will be disfigured.
Originally, James Hiram Bedford's plan was that the nitrogen storage tank would be "unlocked" in 2017, 50 years after his death. But the truth has proven that by 2022, science still has not had the solution to "revive" people as he wished and firmly believed.
55 years after "sealing" the body, the first man to do the resurrection experiment is still lying in a liquid nitrogen tank, waiting for a miracle. All of his relatives have long since passed away and chose a normal burial. If Bedford did wake up one day, he would only be surrounded by strangers and wake up in a world that had changed so much.
The world's first billionaire "freezes his body" waiting to be revived, how will it be in 2024? Therefore, he spent a lot of money to freeze himself and is expected to come back to life in 50 years, in 2017.
