At the age of 83, artist Duc Luu is still very healthy and enthusiastic about volunteer work. In particular, she is eagerly preparing to return to the screen after decades of absence.
Currently, Meritorious Artist Duc Luu lives with his youngest son and his wife in a house located deep in a small alley, behind the communal house of Trung Tu village, Xa Dan, Hanoi. Artist Duc Luu has a peaceful old age, full of material things, two sons are famous and peaceful, a filial daughter-in-law, obedient and talented grandchildren, earn scholarships by themselves. study abroad in the US.
An old artist's day is reading books, listening to classical music without lyrics or revolutionary music, Buddhist scriptures... sometimes, she picks up old friends to play or takes a taxi to meet friends. She also often goes to the temple, meditates with the elderly in Thong Nhat Park.
At an age close to the earth and far from heaven like her, living a happy and healthy life like that is the dream of many people. However, behind that comfortable life is the loneliness of the widow.
Artist Duc Luu's husband is Prof. Dr. Tran Ha Phuong. The two met while studying at the University in the early 1960s. In 1962, they married and lived happily for 50 years until his death.
Artist Duc Luu spent 5 years taking care of her husband who had a stroke and was bedridden. Sometimes, because she worked so hard and ran out of money, she thought that she would die before her husband. However, it is almost time for the 10th anniversary of the late husband's death.
However, she did not sit there to watch the loneliness of old age. She actively participates in social activities, especially volunteer work in remote areas to find joy in life. For nearly a decade now, every year, she has accompanied a volunteer group to mountainous provinces to give gifts to poor and difficult households.
Artist Duc Luu said that before her husband died, she often played Buddhist music for him. The sound of chanting and knocking on the door also seeped into her body. When he passed away, she adopted Buddhism and its philosophies became her way of dealing with life. In the family, keep peace and tolerance; Outside of society, she cares and shares with many unhappy situations.
Artist Duc Luu does not ask or ask his children to neglect their work for themselves. She herself is not the type to sit there and watch old age go by, gnawing on loneliness. That is also the reason why artist Duc Luu works hard to participate in activities. For several years now, she has joined the group twice a year to volunteer far away. Asked if she is concerned about her health, she said that sometimes she is stronger than young people and especially "depends on my will, on my mind" as she shared.

She did not volunteer alone, but invited a group of people with the same "ideal", everyone was excited to contribute their wealth and efforts to help difficult situations.
"God gives me good health, I still go. I believe in spirituality. Those who do charity have a good part, do good God's mercy and will compensate me. Sometimes when I go to charity, even though I'm tired, I find myself again. get well," said artist Duc Luu.

After playing Thi No in "Vu Dai village that day" for 40 years, she did not act in movies. After that film, she returned to the Hanoi Party Committee to work in the foreign affairs department. Although she only left an impression on the public with a single role, it is also the pride not only of her own but also of Vietnamese cinema.
Before playing "Vu Dai Village on that day", artist Duc Luu participated in the play "July Night" and the movie "The construction girl" but did not leave any mark. It was not until the role of Thi No that she was remembered by the audience and knew her name. One of the factors that helped Thi No become the lifetime role of Meritorious Artist Duc Luu is the extremely ugly shape of the character.
In order to have a Thi No like the original author Nam Cao, artist Duc Luu was taken to Viet Duc Hospital by director Pham Van Khoa to turn his shiny white teeth into black teeth. Her nose is also covered with rubber and red product at the tip, both cheeks are covered with cotton tape so that the width is wider than the height of the face. On that day, both Chi Pheo Bui Cuong and Thi No Duc Luu, after having "plastic surgery", returned to Vietnam Feature Film Studio, no one recognized.
Even when looking at himself in the mirror, artist Duc Luu still finds it funny. She is happy that she made the character Thi No come out from the pages of writer Nam Cao and live until now. Many people wonder why in real life she is so beautiful that she can dress up as Thi No so bad. That, of course, is thanks to the talent of the makeup artist and the actors' realistic acting.
After the role, the actress suffered many scandals. Artist Duc Luu said: "When I accepted the role, my friends told me I was so beautiful, why did they accept the role of "the devil hates the devil" but that's because they don't understand art and don't understand me. If you're afraid of being ugly, never go. be an actor".
Surprisingly, when the film was released, some viewers still recognized the beauty of Duc Luu and responded: Sao Thi No is still beautiful, her shoulders are round, her calves are white? But director Pham Van Khoa replied: "That's bad enough". The director surnamed Pham did not want to let that girl go to the bottom of the mud. She must have something innocent and pitiful to move the heart of the unruly human being Chi Pheo. At the same time, many people who watched the movie after meeting Duc Luu often joked: "I just want to be your Chi Pheo". Vai Thi No helped Duc Luu make a mark in his career and was loved by the people. She also did not expect that, over the years, she still "enjoyed" from this role.
"Really, for me, that role has become immortal. I can't imagine, with just one role, my name will be remembered for decades. I have to call it a legend right? " - the female artist confided. However, if she could re-play the role of Thi No, Duc Luu would show it more deeply because her understanding was different. For generations, women have always been mistreated, especially the poor, and ugly, too meek and sad.
In the near future, artist Duc Luu will return to the 7th art after 40 years of absence. She will participate in a film about Hanoi written by screenwriter Hong Ngat.
