NewJeans consolidates ambassadorial power, 'ousts' Babymonster mercilessly?

Currently, the news that New Jeans receives the highest salary among Seoul ambassadors is becoming the hottest topic in the media in the land of kimchi. This has created many different streams of opinion because New Jeans seems to be receiving 'favor'.

According to data on the remuneration of Seoul Metropolitan Public Relations Ambassadors over the past 5 years obtained by the Seoul Provincial Assembly's Committee for Culture, Sports and Tourism, K-pop girl group NewJeans received 240 million won as an honorary ambassador of the Seoul Metropolitan Government. On average, each member receives nearly 50 million won.

This amount is more than half of the total 450 million won paid to 55 people appointed as public relations ambassadors to Seoul in the past five years, and is the highest salary received by any individual.

NewJeans (with 5 members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein) was appointed as a public relations ambassador for the city of Seoul early last year along with YouTuber Shuka World and TikToker On Oppa. Since then, the group has appeared in Seoul city events, such as participating in Seoul Fashion Week.

Of the 55 ambassadors ever appointed, 29 have worked without pay and 23 have received remuneration at least once.

Traditionally, honorary ambassadors of local provinces do not receive payment for their activities. The city of Seoul is the only exception, paying honorary ambassadors salaries while classifying them as non-governmental workers.

In fact, Article 6 of the Seoul Honorary Ambassador Regulations indicates that the role of an honorary ambassador is voluntary, unpaid. But they will receive the "necessary expenses" as prescribed.

The amount that New Jeans received is now facing controversy for exceeding any amount ever paid for the "necessary expenses" of the ambassadors. Instead, the payment is being interpreted more bluntly as "the cost of hiring New Jeans for advertising activities."

Currently, 34 individuals from various fields of expertise are working as honorary ambassadors for the city of Seoul, including 29 who work voluntarily and without pay. It is believed that other ambassadors in the entertainment industry usually receive an average salary of 25 million won.

Countdown Japan takes place for 4 days, from December 28 to December 31. Accordingly, NewJeans will perform on the night of December 31 at the Makuhari Messe in Tokyo.
