In the midst of the sad story that made millions of people mourn about the 21-year-old man in China, McDonald's Vietnam took advantage of the brand's name appearing in the story to create a PR campaign.
On May 6, Vietnamese social media widely spread the tragic story of a 21-year-old man in China, which caused a stir in the country of billions of people earlier. It is known that the main character in the story is nicknamed Fat Cat, who is a gamer, he knew an older girl online and had feelings for this person.
During the time they knew each other, the young man actively "plowed" the game to earn money to serve his lover's hobbies and needs, the total amount of money provided for the girl was estimated at 510,000 yuan (nearly 1.8 billion VND). However, the Fat Cat's efforts did not pay off when his girlfriend definitively refused, causing the gamer to decide to leave in April 2024.
Even in the last moments, the guy still gives the girl he loves the best and does not blame. Worth mentioning, the saying: "In the next life I don't want to eat vegetables anymore, I want to eat McDonald's." has made everyone feel sorry. Everyone is sorry for the guy who spends all his money on his girlfriend and a quick meal can't be eaten.
In the midst of the tragic Fat Cat story spreading, McDonald's Vietnam immediately launched an advertising program on the online food ordering application called: "If you don't like to eat vegetables, eat chicken with BBQ cheese".
Along with that, on the FB page of McDonald's Vietnam, this company also posted an advertising article running a discount code with content related to Fat Cat: "Let's see if McDonald's is enough to satisfy the protesting belly of "eyelid fens" with this combo".
Under the post, many critical comments such as: "Boycott! Inhumane content, taking the dead as content is very evil", "bad food, not professional ethics", "You float like a tampon floating in a river" ...
"While in China, McDonald's China created the code Fat Cat to reduce the hamburger and french fries combo, Chinese netizens also want to use the savings from the discount code to donate to the Cat family. And what kind of trend am I swinging here?" one netizen commented.
Before the rain of anger showed no signs of cooling down, McDonald's Vietnam posted an apology on its official fan page (with a blue tick, 82 million followers) because the ad "follows" the tragic story of the gamer Fat Cat.
"Today, information about McDonald's new programs and products with inappropriate language related to Fat Cats has surfaced on some McDonald's online delivery platforms.
This creates offense, distress and reprimands from the community that we - the McDonald's Vietnam team must self-review, as well as would like to sincerely apologize to you Fat Cat and your family, community and all khá.ch customers who have always trusted and accompanied McDonald's". The famous fast food company wrote.
McDonald's said after the incident took the matter seriously. They are aware that addressing sensitive topics in communication not only hurts those involved, but also affects khá.ch trust. On top of that, the fast food company admits mistakes due to carelessness in censoring the content posted.
"McDonald's would like to extend our sincere apologies to Fat Cat and his family and khá.ch customers and announce that they will remove all offensive content that is present on all platforms," the brand wrote.
After the incident, McDonald's said it would conduct a strict review of the content moderation process and review with relevant internal personnel, as well as learn from experience to avoid unnecessary cases in the future.
