From a nanny like other women, through tricks, she reached the pinnacle of fame and fortune. That is Khach Thi, or her real name is Khach An Nguyet, the nursemaid of King Minh Hy Tong.
Minh Hy Tong (1605 - 1627) was the 16th Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, whose real name was Chu Do Hieu. He was the eldest son of Emperor Minh Quang Tong - the shortest-serving Emperor in Ming Dynasty history, because he died after only 29 days in office. After his father passed away, Chu Do Hieu ascended the throne at the age of 15.
Minh Hy Tong was said to be an uneducated king and he was also illiterate, could not approve documents, and could not handle court affairs, causing many neighboring countries to despise the Ming Dynasty. Minh Hy Tong assigned all court affairs to the eunuch, Wei Trung Hien, and his nanny, Khach Thi, to take charge of the court.
Khach Thi's real name is Khach An Nguyet, the nursemaid of King Minh Hy Tong. Because Minh Hy Tong's mother, Hieu Hoa, Queen Vuong Thi, unfortunately passed away early, Minh Hy Tong grew up under the care of a wet nurse from a young age. Guest Thi is about 18 years old, married to a farmer in Bao Dinh, Hebei and has a daughter. However, her daughter unfortunately passed away only about a month after birth.
The fact that Khach An Nguyet became the nanny of Prince Chu Do Hieu is also a legendary story. It is said that, from the moment he was born, Prince Chu Do Hieu had the habit of being "picky" about his nanny. More than a dozen wet nurses were unable to breastfeed this prince. Therefore, the eunuchs were ordered to find a wet nurse who could breastfeed Chu Do Hieu and take him back to the palace. Guest An Nguyet has never been a nanny, however, she is the only one accepted by Prince Chu Do Hieu.
According to the rules in the harem, when the prince is 6-7 years old, the nanny must leave the palace. However, even though Chu Do Hieu was old, he still refused to leave Khach An Nguyet. Later, when he became Emperor at the age of 15, he was still the same. Even when one day Chu Do Hieu did not see his nanny once, he felt extremely uncomfortable and restless.
The reason is probably because Chu Do Hieu's mother died early, so he lacked a mother's care from an early age. Therefore, Guest An Nguyet practically became a mother substitute for Chu Do Hieu. Perhaps for this reason, Hy Tong later especially favored and trusted this nanny.
On September 21, 1620, just half a month after ascending the throne, Hy Tong appointed Khach An Nguyet the title of Lady Phung Thanh, and also bestowed the title of Khach's son, Hau Hung, Cam Y Ve, the official commander of the country. The Ho family chose 20 acres of good land to give to the Guest family to cultivate incense and fire fields. Such a generous reward for such a nanny naturally met with fierce opposition from the ministers. To calm public opinion, Hy Tong issued an edict clearly stating the incomparable merit of Khach An Nguyet.
With this edict, Guest An Nguyet from a commoner became a noble lady, able to enjoy all the glory and wealth of the world. However, bestowing a title on Guest An Nguyet was not Hy Tong's final grace for his wet nurse. As time went on, Hy Tong favored the Khach Thi more and more, even to the point that many historians today find it inexplicable.
In the winter of 1620, Guest An Nguyet moved to the west of Can Thanh palace, Emperor Hy Tong came to congratulate him. The Emperor rewarded the banquet, Tu Chung Co led the eunuchs to act. The Emperor was very happy so he allowed the Guests to enter and exit the palace on a small palanquin from now on, personally choosing the eunuchs in the palace to act as people. Carrying the palanquin and all the rituals are no different from those of a concubine.
In the 2nd year of Thien Khai, the Guest Palace moved to Ham An Palace and became even more powerful. Hy Tong gave Guest An Nguyet eunuchs Thoi Loc, Hua Quoc Ninh... more than ten people, plus others who volunteered to serve and take care of up to a hundred people. Every time Guest An Nguyet's birthday came, the Emperor himself came to congratulate him and give him countless rewards.
Salaries and salaries used at Guest An Nguyet's place were sometimes even more rushed than at the Emperor's place. Even though she was Phung Thanh's wife and received the Emperor's benefits, Hy Tong's meals were still taken care of by the Guests. Every day, if the Emperor couldn't finish eating three meals a day, he would give them to Guest An Nguyet. Three meals a day, the concubine brought food to the palace and had to travel non-stop between the two places.
Liu Nhuoc Ngu, a eunuch of the Ming Dynasty, author of a book about the secret stories of the Ming Dynasty, also lamented the favor that Hy Tong gave to Kha Yin Nguyet, saying: "I was a nanny but stayed forever." In a palace, luxury can also be known." He still remembers that, at that time, every time Guest An Nguyet left the palace to go home, there were about a dozen eunuchs following him, with red robes and jade belts walking in front, and behind the palanquin were hundreds of people following as entourage. The fleet of torches is about two or three thousand. Exiting the palace gate, changing into an eight-person palanquin, "The chanting was louder than the sound of the traveling cross, the torches were as bright as day, the clothes were as beautiful as those of angels, the people were like flowing water, the horses were like dragons."
Luu Nhuoc Ngu used to work as a eunuch and was a person next to the emperor. He met many things and still admired them to such an extent. It can be seen how much favor and luxury Khanh Thi received. Historians of the Ming Dynasty also had to affirm that: "No royal concubine in the palace is as good as that."
What makes Guest An Nguyet receive such attention and favor from Hy Tong?
Accordingly, the love between Khach Thi and Minh Hy Tong is not simply the love of a child for his mother, but that of lovers treating each other. Historians even affirmed that there was definitely a love affair between Minh Hy Tong and Khach Thi.
When Minh Hy Tong ascended the throne, Khach Thi was around 40 years old, but she was still as beautiful as a 28-year-old beauty, making Minh Hy Tong in her youth fascinated. Moreover, even though she was a widow, she was naturally beautiful and flirtatious, so Khach Thi never considered herself Minh Hy Tong's nanny.
Not only that, there is also an anecdote saying that the Guest lady gave medicine to Minh Hy Tong. This medicine, when consumed, will make men fuller and more demanding in bed. Minh Hy Tong also passed away for this reason after only 7 years in office. After Minh Hy Tong died in 1627, his youngest brother, Emperor Minh Tu Tong, succeeded the throne.
