On May 26, Yonhap News reported that Kang Ji Hwan and his former management agency Jellyfish Entertainment had to pay 5.3 billion won (about 4.19 million USD) in compensation for the actor's sexual abuse scandal. Before that, he was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison and 3 years of probation.
Specifically, due to the suspicion of sexual assault, the actor was forced to leave the crew of the movie "Joseon Survival Period". At that time, the series had only filmed 12 episodes, so the production company Santa Claus had to find an actor to replace Kang Ji Hwan in the remaining 8 episodes. Santa Claus filed a lawsuit asking the actor to pay 6.38 billion won (about 5.04 million USD).
After the initial hearing, the court accepted the majority of the plaintiff's motion. The court ordered Kang Ji Hwan and Jellyfish Entertainment - the actor's management company at the time the scandal broke out - to jointly pay 5.3 billion won (about 4.19 million USD).
The court said that Kang Ji Hwan and Jellyfish Entertainment are responsible for compensating damages based on the contract between the actor and Santa Claus. In addition, the court decided to increase the compensation when it found that the production company was forced to pay extra wages to recruit an actor to replace Kang Ji Hwan.
Usually, in a similar case, the actor and the management company have to split up to pay half of the compensation. Rates may vary depending on the extent of the violation. However, it is likely that Kang Ji Hwan and Jellyfish Entertainment will appeal.
Previously, Kang Ji Hwan admitted to sexually assaulting two outsourced employees of the film "Joseon Survival Period" in July 2019.
The two victims of the incident also interviewed by the media, confirming that they went to the famous star's private house for work purposes and slept there overnight. "We first met Kang Ji Hwan last April while working. We are not very close to him," this person said.
They explained that July 9 was the first time they went to the celebrity's house and there were about 8 people there including 2 managers, a stylist, Kang Ji Hwan and a few others. It was a farewell party with one of the girls.

It is known that a neighbor saw two young girls and several men enter Kang Ji Hwan's house at 1 pm on July 9. The two girls said that they are not close to Kang, so they certainly wouldn't have come to Kang's house if it wasn't for work.
Kang Ji Hwan promised to call a taxi for the two girls when they left his house. The Korean actor's house is quite far from the center, so if they want to leave, they have to call a taxi company. The two girls said, Kang Ji Hwan arranged for them a room on the second floor.
"After talking, we brought Kang Ji Hwan who was already drunk to his room on the 3rd floor. After that, we left, back to the room Kang arranged for us, we sleep there".
The two girls added, "Around 8-9pm, I woke up and felt that I had been abused. I was screaming and trying to protect myself. But Kang was doing it with the other girl, she was still sleeping I didn't expect such things to happen because when we went to bed, Kang Ji Hwan was on the 3rd floor, not in our room.. When I found out about it, I really panicked. chaos".
The two girls explained that Kang Ji Hwan slept for about 3 hours before abusing them. The two victims screamed a lot and Kang had to leave the room. They then locked the room and Kang Ji Hwan asked them to open the door. The two girls contacted friends for help and around 10 pm on July 9, after more than an hour and a half, the police arrived at actor Kang Ji Hwan's house.
The two girls tried to call the police themselves, but could not be reached, so they asked friends for help. Both victims confided that they had difficult days because of psychological shock and were forced to go to psychological treatment. They want to emphasize that they are victims of sexual abuse and ask for blind comments, inaccurate rumors about them taking advantage of the popularity-seeking case to end.
Due to the incident, Kang Ji Hwan was ostracized and forced to leave the film project, being replaced by another actor.
During the trial in June 2020, Kang Ji Hwan was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison and 3 years of probation for sexual assault. After that, Kang Ji Hwan filed an appeal.
In 2020, the actor is said to be unjustly accused in the case. Sports Chosun reported that in the video extracted from Kang Ji Hwan's home security camera, the actor was unconscious during the time the two girls were bathing, walking around his house in only underwear. In addition, the actor's DNA was not found in the two girls' bodies, but only in personal items.
