Any K-pop star signs an unwritten "contract", subject to lifelong scrutiny in public, as they are willing to praise or criticize to their liking.
So it's no surprise that some stars have been caught making "mistakes" and apologizing, but are they really necessary?
Sometimes, Korea's rabid fan culture forces idols to apologize even though they haven't actually done anything wrong, from hanging out with friends to decisions out of control, K-pop idols had to apologize for some ridiculous reason in the past.
1. NCT 127: For singing a new song
Recently, the members of NCT 127 made headlines when they released their new song "Earthquake", during a live broadcast they held to celebrate the release of their latest album. While the members were chatting, a staff member's emergency phone alarm for an earthquake suddenly rang.
It is known that at the same time, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the sea near Seogwipo city, Jeju Island, South Korea. At first, when the members first heard the warning sound, the members thought it was a warning bell related to COVID-19 information.
However, the staff then checked the warning and informed the members that there was an earthquake in Jeju. While some members were quite confused, there were 3 members who had controversial reactions.
Accordingly, member Doyoung suddenly loudly said, "Earthquake", referring to the fact that the group's album also includes the song "Earthquake. Then Mark started singing while Johnny even danced to the song.
Immediately after realizing their improper actions, Doyoung, Mark and Johnny quickly posted an apology on Instagram Story. All 3 members apologized and admitted that they had acted inappropriately because they were not aware of the situation, and said they would deeply self-criticize so as not to make similar mistakes again.
2. Jungkook (BTS): Because going out with female friends
During BTS's vacation in 2019, CCTV footage was leaked showing Jungkook spending time with a female friend named Lee Mi Joo, which immediately sparked dating rumors between the two. BTS' management company, Big Hit Entertainment, denied the rumors and Ms. Lee also had to release a statement on Instagram about closing things.
Big Hit Entertainment even sued the person who leaked the photos, for breach of privacy and defamation. During BTS's "Bon Voyage 4," the fourth season of the group's travel reality show, Jungkook had a segment where he personally apologized to fans, saying, "I'm so sorry to the fans. I'm sorry. still feel guilty about it" and ended with a promise not to let fans down.
Although he didn't do any harm, Jungkook clearly showed a lot of care for his fans' love for him.
3. Winwin (NCT): Also hanging out with girls
Similarly, NCT member nWinwin also received some disappointment when earlier this year he was spotted spending time with two of his female friends in China. The trio were seen having a meal before heading to a game center late at night and Winwin was spotted smoking a cigarette later on their way home.
While some were disappointed by the guy's behavior, especially his smoking, others said that Winwin had grown up and hadn't really done anything wrong. However, the male singer still apologized directly to fans through the LYSN app, explaining that he had met some friends who studied Chinese opera and said, "I really feel sorry for that. made everyone worried."
4. Hyungwon (Monsta X): Spending time with an old member
In early 2020, the six current members of Monsta X were seen dining with former member Wonho - who left the group in 2019 but is still signed to the same management company, Starship Entertainment. Although many fans were delighted to see the seven members interacting and having a good time, some felt differently, criticizing the current members for maintaining contact with Wonho.
Hyungwon released a statement shortly after and apologized on behalf of the group. Although he did not explicitly mention the photos, the content of the statement led fans to believe that it was a direct response to the aforementioned photos. Understandably, people have debated whether this apology was necessary.
5. Nam Do Hyon and Lee Han Gyul (X1): Decisions made by the company
After it was revealed that the votes for the 2020 Mnet survival show "Produce X 101" had been rigged, the companies representing the members decided that the group would disband. In particular, two members Nam Do Hyon and Lee Han Gyul from MBK Entertainment took to their personal Instagram to apologize to fans.
The two have apologized for the sudden, unexpected news, although the disbandment was the decision of the company, not the members. Fans were extremely angry, thinking that the group's disbandment was unreasonable, even trending the hashtag #FightForX1 on Twitter. In particular, the apology of the two members has received confusion and sympathy from fans, who feel that the idols themselves have done nothing wrong.
