Appearing on The Khang Show, the veteran artist of the overseas stage shared about her journey of overcoming a mental crisis, how she lived quietly after a breakup and relearned the most important lesson: living peacefully.
At the age of 60, Hong Dao is still busy with filming, performing, participating in movies and taking on the role of brand ambassador. But behind that familiar calmness are years of silently fighting against trauma - a journey that the female artist recounts to the audience for the first time.
"I once fell into a period of silence that seemed impossible to overcome. But I looked at my children, my parents, and my acting career to gain the motivation to rise little by little," Hong Dao frankly said.
The psychological shock after marriage forced her to be hospitalized. During one hospital stay, when the nurse recognized her as a celebrity, the doctor asked: "Why do you make others laugh but can't laugh yourself?" That question, seemingly simple, touched on the pain that she always tried to hide. It made Hong Dao think for a long time and from then on, she chose "pretending to laugh" as a method of self-healing.
"Laughter is not only for others, but also how I heal myself," she said.
Not choosing to share widely, nor too much to tell, Hong Dao retreated to a slow life, sought meditation and became a vegetarian. One day, by chance, she had the opportunity to meet Master Minh Niem - who told her a short but profound sentence: "A wounded tiger must retreat to its cave to heal itself". For her, that sentence was like a key to open the way back. It was not flashy, not noisy, just small steps to find peace in the soul.
"Even when the wound heals, it still leaves a scar, but I have to learn to live with it," Hong Dao confided.
She did not actively tell many friends, only sharing with a few close people. "Sometimes, just one person listening and being silent is enough," she said with a calm look. After the incident, Hong Dao was like someone who had gone through the storm and no longer needed to prove anything to anyone.
Now, her life is simpler and more relaxed. Every day, she spends an hour for herself - drinking tea, listening to jazz, doing light exercise before getting back to work. "An hour for myself is a luxury," Hong Dao said with a gentle smile.
Even though her children are grown and no longer live with her, she still maintains family ties through text messages, photos and intimate conversations. "I want to keep a warm home so that my children always have a place to return to," she said. Her children also always hope that their mother will have someone to accompany her in old age. "If I have someone by my side, my children are the happiest," she recalled, her eyes sparkling with quiet joy.
Not making noise on social networks, not following trends, Hong Dao chooses to live a private life, persevering with her career and quietly contributing. Recently, she has attracted attention with two profound roles in the films Mai by Tran Thanh and Chi Dau by Khuong Ngoc. Besides her artistic work, she also does office work, representing a brand for a group of middle-aged customers - something that not many people know.
In the near future, audiences will meet Hong Dao again in the movie Mang Me Di Bo, where she transforms into the character Le Thi Hanh - an experienced woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Every day, her character lives like a child, gradually losing control of her memory and behavior. However, the memories of her youth in Korea are still deeply imprinted in the character's subconscious, creating emotional depth for the role.
For Hong Dao, after all, the most important thing is not fame, but peace of mind. "Living is to stay healthy, to be a support for parents and children," she said. She herself is now no longer bound by anything, can freely go anywhere, but in the end still wants to return to her home.
"I am no longer bound by anything, I can go anywhere, but I just want to return to my home. That is where I recharge my batteries, the peaceful place I always return to," Hong Dao concluded the conversation with a light smile.
From the wounds and losses, Hong Dao has learned to heal herself. Not by complaining or being sad, but by understanding herself and being grateful for the little things in life. To the audience, she is still a lovable artist - gentle, profound and always maintaining her own charm, both in art and in daily life.
