On September 10, the Hindustan Times reported that beauty Shrinkala Khatiwada - Miss Nepal 2018, top 12 Miss World 2018 - suddenly became the focus of criticism in a public protest by young people against political corruption in Nepal.
Shrinkala Khatiwada was a prominent face of Nepal when she was crowned in 2018 and won the title of Miss Charity at the international arena. However, the halo of beauty now seems to have become a "burden" when she was caught up in a wave of anger aimed at the children of rich and powerful politicians.
Shrinkala is the daughter of Nepalâs former Health Minister. He is currently facing serious charges of corruption and illicit enrichment. Nepalese people believe that not only politicians themselves, but also their children, including Shrinkala, have amassed huge fortunes and enjoyed privileges through shady means.
Nepalese media even published pictures of Shrinkala and her husband using a military helicopter to "see the scenery from above", while the official press at the time reported the incident as a rescue operation. The incident further angered public opinion because it was believed that the beauty's family had taken advantage of public property for personal purposes.
Another question is also raised: why, with a low salary as a government official, could Shrinkala's father still afford to send his daughter to Harvard University - one of the most expensive schools in the United States.
After the news spread, Shrinkala Khatiwada faced a wave of negative reactions. More than 100,000 people unfollowed her Instagram account in just a few days. Under enormous pressure, the former beauty queen was forced to disable all of her personal social media.
Nepalese public opinion believes that the extravagance and splendor that "nepo kids" (a term used to refer to children of wealthy and powerful families) flaunt on social media is an insult to the poverty-stricken lives of the majority of the population. Nepal is currently ranked among the poorest countries in Asia, while the children of the elite freely flaunt their high-class lives.
Born in 1995, Shrinkala Khatiwada is considered a model of an intellectual and ambitious woman. Coming from a family with a political tradition - her father was a member of the Central Parliament, her mother was the Chairman of Makwanpur district and a state parliamentarian - she soon expressed her dream of becoming the first female Prime Minister of Nepal.
After graduating with a degree in Architecture from Tribhuvan University, Shrinkala was crowned Miss Nepal and made her mark on the international stage. In 2023, she continued to make the public admire her when she announced that she had completed her Master's degree in Urban Management at Harvard University.
However, her personal achievements are now overshadowed by a wave of protests related to her family. Observers say that Shrinkala is becoming a symbol of the contradiction between two images: one is an intellectual beauty queen with many social contributions, the other is a "official's child" who is considered to enjoy privilege and is out of touch with reality. In that context, although Shrinkala Khatiwada does not directly participate in political activities like her father, it is difficult to avoid being targeted by public opinion.
