On the morning of December 14th, the area at the foot of the spillway of the Tri An hydroelectric reservoir (Tri An commune, Dong Nai province) became unusually bustling as hundreds of people flocked there to take advantage of the opportunity to "hunt for fish" as the reservoir began to close after about a week of releasing floodwaters in the third phase.

People flocked there in large numbers, bringing all sorts of tools and equipment.

From dawn, the area along the base of the dam was crowded with people. Each person carried a different "collection" of equipment: hand nets, casting nets, bamboo poles, and even specialized fishing nets.

Many people prepared more thoroughly, bringing inflatable floats, small boats, and large sacks, ready for a prolonged "harvest." The excitement was evident on everyone's faces, as everyone hoped to bring home a bountiful catch of fish, considered a "gift from heaven" at the end of the year.

Not only locals, but also people from Ho Chi Minh City participated.

Besides residents of Tri An commune, this area also saw many people from neighboring localities such as Trang Dai, Tan Trieu, Binh Minh, Trang Bom... Notably, many people drove from Ho Chi Minh City just to participate in the fishing event when the hydroelectric dam closed.

Many people said they had been monitoring the dam release and closure schedules beforehand, and whenever they heard that the release was about to stop, they would quickly arrange their time to go fishing.

The moment the dam closes: the water stops flowing, cheers resound across the banks.

At exactly 8:00 AM, when the main spillway gates were officially closed, the raging water quickly subsided and then stopped completely. The entire area at the base of the dam erupted in cheers and shouts of joy.

Just about 10 minutes later, groups of people paddled canoes and waded through the water towards the middle of the dam to begin their "fishing festival." The atmosphere was both lively and hectic, as everyone wanted to take advantage of the time before the fish dispersed.

There were fewer large fish, mostly small ones.

Despite the lively atmosphere, many experienced fishermen noted that the fish catch this year is lower than in previous years. Large fish like catfish, snakehead, or giant carp are not as abundant. Instead, the majority are small and medium-sized fish. However, this hasn't dampened the excitement. Ms. Loan, a resident of Tri An commune, shared: "There aren't as many big fish as in previous years, but everyone still enjoys going fishing. Today is Sunday, and with the possibility of closing the dams for the last time this year, people are taking advantage of the opportunity."

Among hundreds of fishermen, Mr. Thinh became the center of attention when he caught a nearly 18kg spotted carp. The large fish drew admiring glances from the onlookers.

Mr. Thinh recounted that he and his group of friends only learned about the dam closure schedule the night before, so they arrived very early this morning. "As soon as the water receded, we saw a large fish thrashing violently in the rocky crevices. We had to work quite hard to keep it. This is probably the biggest fish caught during this year-end flood release," he said.

Not everyone is lucky.

In contrast to the joy of some who struck it rich, many others, despite wading through water from morning until noon with their clothes soaked, only managed to catch a few kilograms of low-quality fish.

A middle-aged man, while untangling his nets, shouted loudly: "Freshly caught fish, selling in bunches for only 70,000 dong. Anyone who buys them to make sour fish soup for lunch today will be delighted!" His shouts, mixed with laughter and chatter, made the area near the dam even more lively.

Tri An Lake – More Than Just a Hydroelectric Power Plant

Tri An Lake, with a surface area of over 323 km², is located on the Dong Nai River. It is one of the largest hydroelectric projects in the southern region, playing a crucial role in providing electricity and regulating floods for the downstream area.

Each time the dam is opened and closed, it always attracts a large crowd, creating a unique aspect of life in this riverine region. Although large fish are no longer as abundant as before, the "fishing festival" at Tri An Lake still retains its unique appeal: lively, intimate, and imbued with the atmosphere of riverine life at the end of the year.
